Tiger boys battle for lead, show support for the fight

The Morris Area boys' basketball team moved to 7-2 in the West Central Conference South with a 74-66 win over Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City Saturday night.

The Tigers avenged a previous loss on the road and dashed the Falcons' title hopes. The loss puts A-C-GC at 5-3 in the conference and 9-5 overall.

The Tigers will battle for the conference lead Thursday in Montevideo. The ThunderHawks are 6-1 in the WCCS.

"Every stat category was pretty even," said coach Mark Torgerson.

In fact, both teams recorded 30 rebounds and 27 fouls, which sent players to the free-throw line 78 times.

The Tigers were 22-of-38 at the line. The Falcons were 22-of-40.

The Tigers had a slight advantage shooting from the field. Morris was 26-of-54 from the field, while the Falcons were 21-of-56.

Center Jackson Henrich led the Tigers with 23 points, including two late baskets that broke a 63-all tie.

Three other Tigers were also in double figures in the scoring column. Lincoln Arnold had 18 points, while Taylor Nohl and Chris Scott had 12 apiece.

Also scoring for the Tigers were Cory Hennen and Corey Nohl with four each and Tyler Meichsner with one free throw.

Henrich also led the team at the boards with nine rebounds. Arnold grabbed eight.

Arnold also dished out seven assists.

Taylor Nohl had a team-high three steals.

Besides fighting for the lead in the conference, the Tigers were showing their support of the fight against cancer by wearing pink shoelaces and t-shirts featuring the cancer ribbon. It was a Coaches versus Cancer game, featuring fundraisers for the American Cancer Society.
