Tiger boys win and place third at holiday tourney

The Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta boys’ basketball team participated in the St. James Area Holiday Tournament this past Friday and Saturday, Dec. 27-28.

The host team, the St. James Saints, ended up taking the holiday tournament title, and the Tigers took home third place with a 54-42 win over Springfield on Friday, the Tigers’ first win of the season. The Tigers lost to Rockford 80-52 in Thursday tournament action.

Rockford 80, Morris/C-A 52

The Tigers took a 80-52 loss to Rockford in the first round of the St. James Area Holiday Tournament on Friday, Dec. 27.

The Tigers ended the game just 38-percent from the field on 18-47 shooting.

Sophomore Eric Stabler shot 56-percent from the field on 10-18 shooting and led the team with 22 points, boosting his average points per game to 18.6. Staebler also grabbed six rebounds for the Tigers.

Junior Noah Grove added 10 points along with three rebounds and four assists.

Freshman Jacob Zozel ended the game with eight points, five for six from the free throw line and a three pointer on his only attempt.

Junior Andrew Goulet also grabbed five rebounds and got a steal in the loss to Rockford.

Morris/C-A 54, Springfield 42

The Tigers tipped off against the Springfield Tigers for the third place game of the St. James Area Holiday Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 28. A 40-point second half lifted the Tigers over Springfield 54-42 for their first win of the season.

The Tigers trailed behind Springfield 25-14 at halftime, but an explosive second half and three players hitting double digits scoring proved to be too much for the tamer Tigers of Springfield.

Despite Staebler's 29-percent field goal percentage, he still managed to get his fifth double-double of the season with 14 points and 18 rebounds.

Grove led the team with a game-high 21 points, including three three-pointers, bumping his average points per game to 13.7. Grove also added six for six from the free throw line and four assists for the Tigers.

Zozel was the third leading scorer in the game against Springfield with 11 points. Zozel also had two steals and four assists in the win.

Goulet got three steals in the game, now averaging nearly two steals per game in the last six games for the Tigers.

Senior Bryce Jergenson had three assists, and averages 3.5 assists per game in the last six games.

The Tigers are back in the action at home versus Milbank on Friday, Jan. 3. The B-squad will tip off at 6:00 p.m., and varsity will follow at 7:30 p.m.
