Awesome news: Morris Area Elementary School has been named a 2012 Celebration School! This award is given by the Minnesota Department of Education to recognize a school’s performance in student proficiency, student growth, and closure of the achievement gap. In other words – students, staff, parents, and the Morris area community are doing a great job!

Morris Area was first identified as a Celebration Eligible School when it placed in the top 60th to 86th percentile of top performing schools based on its MMR, and after an application process, was among the 10 percent of Title I schools to be selected for the Celebration School Award. This award is based on 2012 MCA scores – during former principal Brad Korn’s tenure. Give him a high five the next time you see him!

Minnesota Education Commissioner Dr. Brenda Cassellius said selecting Morris Area Elementary School, “is a direct reflection of the gains your school has made and the tireless efforts your staff have directed toward improving outcomes for your students. It takes focus and commitment to put systems and strategies in place that yield the kind of results your school has shown. Your entire team deserves sincere congratulations for this outstanding achievement.”

As always, if you have any questions or would just like to visit, please stop in; this is your school!

Don’t forget Coffee with Ken held from 7:00 – 7:30 a.m. in the school cafeteria the first Friday of each month (next opportunity March 1). This is a time for fellowship, asking questions, and getting to know your school a little bit better!

1. School WILL be in session Monday, Feb. 18.  (make-up day)

2. Barring any more snow days, Tuesday, Feb. 12, will be the 100th day of school – a very big event for our kindergarten students!

3. Join us for our first annual Dare Mighty Things Day on Friday, March 1, starting at 2:15 p.m. in the M.A.E.S. Concert Hall. Students are invited to dress for their “dream” careers on that day.

4. Remember that all elementary teaching staff now have their own individual web pages. This is a great resource to check the weekly happenings/schedules/ lessons for your child’s classroom. To access teacher sites, first go to the district web site, then click on Elementary, then on Faculty. To access my site, first go to the district web site, then click on Elementary, then on PRINCIPAL.

5.  News From our PE Department:  The Physical Education Department would like to thank the many family and friends that helped make our winter activities a huge success. We had many volunteers to help find, tighten, tie and untie skates for our ice skating unit at the Lee Community Center. It would be very challenging to do this unit without your support! We also want to thank the 30 family members who will join the fourth grades students from MAES and St. Mary’s for our annual ski trip to Andes Tower Hills. The new date for this is Tuesday, Feb. 19.  The 2013 Jump Rope for Heart event will be on Friday, Feb. 22.  Check the schedule and see if you are able to join us for some jammin’ and jumpin’! Last year our event raised $11,649.00 for the American Heart Association. We are continually amazed by the support of our families and the communities we live in.
