Tiger football kicks off this weekend
The Morris Area / Chokio-Alberta Tiger football team has been practicing hard since Aug. 11 and even took part in a scrimmage in the heavy humidity in Breck on Saturday, Aug. 23. As the weather cools down, it’s time for the boys of Fall to hit the field to officially open the 2014 season, and that they will on Friday, Aug. 29.
Under the direction of head coach Kevin Pope, the Tigers will look to improve on their two-win rebuilding season from 2013. MA/C-A had 15 seniors and a very positive group last year, and that positive attitude didn’t graduate, Pope said.
“The positive attitude and work ethic in this group of guys is great,” Pope said. “Even in this humidity we’ve been having, they are still pushing each other every day. We always say at the beginning of the year, ‘This is a new team, after this season you won’t play with this group of guys ever again… Make every day count.’”
The Tigers have returning West Central Conference players Nate Vipond and Isaac Wente who will captain this years Tigers along with Trent Wulf and Riley Biesterfeld. Wente received MVP for MA/C-A last season – a well earned award for rushing over 1,100 yards in 2013. Vipond will be a valuable member on the line, Biesterfeld and Wulf both look to get yards receiving this year.
“We have a lot of returning varsity guys and we hope to move up some underclassmen that are hustling and want that varsity experience, too” Pope said. “I think we’ll be a well-balanced team this year… It should be a good season.”
The Tigers open up the 2014 season at home against the Melrose Dutchmen on Friday, Aug. 29 at 8 p.m. Also on Friday, the Tiger volleyball team hosts Melrose at 6 p.m. and one ticket gets you into both events.
