Tiger football preview 2008
The Morris Area football team returns nine starters from last season and will use their experience to improve on 2007's 3-7 overall record.
"We looked pretty good at the scrimmage last Saturday," said coach Jerry Witt, as he begins his 27th year leading the Tigers. The Tigers hosted Breckenridge, Ortonville, and Long Prairie for scrimmages.
Returning starters include senior quarterback Matt Wulf, who threw for 433 yards while completing 30 of 67 passes and two touchdowns last season.
Returning as wide receivers/cornerbacks for the Tigers are seniors Tyler Meichsner and Taylor Nohl. Meichsner is the Tigers' back-up quarterback.
Three running backs return from last season. They include senior Corey O'Keefe, junior Wade Backman, and sophomore Eric Riley. All three also play in the linebacker position.
Senior Josh Love makes a move to center this year.
On defense, senior Jared Harstad led the Tigers in 2007 with 81 tackles. He will play defensive end/tight end.
Also, junior Lewis Varnum returns to play guard/cornerback.
With new alignments, rival Minnewaska Area is now part of the West Central Conference South. However, the Tigers are not scheduled to play Benson this year, even though the Braves are still in the same half of the conference.
Witt said he expects Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City to be tough in the conference. In fact, he believes the Falcons are one of the state's top five teams this season. BOLD will also be strong in the WCC-South according to Witt.
