Head coach Jerry Witt said his 2010 Morris Area football team possessed many weapons on the field. Being named an Academic All-State Gold team was one of the many accomplishments achieved by the Morris Area varsity football team in 2010.
Seventeen seniors finished a successful football career at Morris Area when the Tigers were eliminated in the second round of the Section 5AA tournament.
As a team, the Tigers made two major achievements in 2010. The team won the West Central Conference South title outright for the first time since 1989 and earned Gold recognition as an Academic All-State team in Class AA. Individually, several players also received honors. Eight members of the team were recognized by the conference and Alex McIntosh was named to the All-State Academic team.
The senior roster includes Cody Cannon, Ryan Beyer, Brady Valnes, Tristan Michealson, Mitch Kill, Tyler Hansen, Ethan Bruer, Jordon Fletcher, Eric Riley, Cody Hickman, Justin Stallman, Cole Riley, Alex McIntosh, Micah Fehr, Travis Rinkenberger, Conor Arnold, and Brian Miller.
"These seniors were very successful throughout their football career," said coach Jerry Witt. "They have a lot of talented people. That makes a big difference.
"They had experience having been through difficult times and tough games," added Witt. "There's no substitute for experience."
As Witt explained, that talent was evident with many weapons on both sides of the football.
The offense had many gifted runners and a powerful offensive line, while the defense could stifle the opponent's game.
"I thought the kids played very well for the most part," Witt said. "All those kids played better as the season went on and all of them made some big plays for us."
Losing 17 players will change the makeup of next season's team, but Witt is confident that the remaining players will step up and continue the Tigers' success.
"We had some underclassmen that got a lot of experience," he said. "They can hopefully build off this season for next year."
