Tiger girls start year with 69-52 win
Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta improved to 4-2 with a non-conference girls' basketball win Tuesday night on the home court.The Tigers defeated Section 6AA rival Osakis 69-52.
"After a long 15-day break, the Tigers came out firing on all cylinders - shooting a season-high 47 percent from the field," said coach Ken Gagner. "As any coach will tell you - good shooting can cure a lot of ills.
"I thought we played with good energy and our girls were mentally ready to play," Gagner added. "We pushed the ball well and played most of the game at a tempo we like."
The Tigers may meet up with Osakis again in the Section 6AA West tournament.
"Osakis is a very young team that is going to improve all season long - they will be dangerous come play-off time," said Gagner.
Nicole Gillespie scored 22 points to lead the Tigers. Jenna Nelson added 11 points and Mary Rentz followed with 10.
Nelson led the team in rebounds with six and steals with four. She was second in assists with four - tied with Sarah Kuhn. Rentz had a personal season high of seven assists and also grabbed five boards.
The Tigers completed a sweep over Osakis with the C-Squad winning at the buzzer and the B-squad by a three-point cushion.
The Tigers resume play at home on Friday night when they host conference foe Yellow Medicine East.
