Tiger girls stay on top of standings

After a setback against the Falcons last week, the Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta girls' basketball team stayed tied for first place in the conference with a 64-37 balanced attack at BOLD Thursday.

The Tigers are tied with Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City and Minnewaska for the lead in the West Central Conference South standings. All three teams had a 7-1 record after Thursday's games.

The Warriors jumped out to a 4-0 start, but the Tigers followed with a 28-0 run and never looked back.

"We were able to keep this game at our pace and the girls got great looks at the basket," said coach Ken Gagner. "All 12 ladies were able to see action and the scoring was spread out nicely with seven girls scoring between six and 11 points.

"BOLD is very young with only one senior and, although the score doesn't show it, coach Kingery has them on the right track," added Gagner.

The Tigers were shooting 38.60 percent from the field and were 18-of-25 at the free-throw line.

Mary Rentz and Megan Dierks led the Tigers with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Also scoring were Heather Gagner with nine, Nicole Gillespie and Jenna Nelson with eight apiece, Alissa Melberg with seven, Kelsey Amundson with six, Stefanie Strobel with four, and Kelsey Greenwaldt with one.

Dierks led at the board with six rebounds.

Nelson and Gagner each recorded four steals.

Nelson also dished out eight assists.
