Tiger Sharks perform well in NLSA meet

On Tuesday evening, the Morris Tiger Sharks traveled to Fergus Falls for a NLSA swim meet, and the sharks tried out 11 new events, worked for 15 time cuts, and achieved 22 Minnesota "B" and "C" time swims.

Led by coaches Emma Durkee and Tess Cotter, the Sharks had 15 swimmers among the 85 at the meet.

In the 8-under division, in her first Tiger Sharks meet, Kalley Johnson took a first and second place finish in the 25 yard freestyle and breaststroke events with times of 34.57 and 54.82, respectively. Makayla Mau, in her second meet this season, took a second and fourth place finish in the 25 yard freestyle and backstroke events with times of 37.75 (a 1.11 second cut from a week ago) and 48.84.

Bryce Schmidgall, also in his second meet this season took a second and third place finish in the 25 yard freestyle and backstroke events with times of 38.13 and 49.60, respectively. Both of Bryce's times showed more than a three second cut from a week ago.

In the 9-10 year old category, Trent Ostby, in his second season of competition, took a first place in the 25 yard butterfly with a 26.09 and fifth place in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 50.48. Rani Bezanson, in her second meet this season, took a first, second, and third place finish in the 25 yard freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke with times of 34.88, 43.31 and 1:01.28. Rani's breaststroke time showed a big 15 second improvement from last week.

Augusta Finzel, in her second season of competition, took a first, second, and third place finish in the her first ever 100 yard freestyle, the 50 yard freestyle, and the 50 yard backstroke with times of 1:26.13, 37.42, and 47.81, respectively. Augusta's two freestyle events also achieved the Minnesota "B" time level, while her backstroke reached the "C" time.

Brenna Monroe, a long time Tiger Shark swimmer, showed her versatility by tackling the 50 yard freestyle, butterfly, breaststroke, and 100 yard individual medley events with times of 44.00, 55.32, 48.50, and 1:46.73 (a career best time). These times were good enough for three second and one fifth place (in the 50 free) finish. Also, Brenna's breaststroke achieved the Minnesota "B" time level, while her freestyle and IM reached the "C" time level.

In the 11 and 12 yard old category, Kristina Johnson, in her first meet this year, showcased a variety of strokes by tackling the 50 yard freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, and 100 yard individual medley with times of 48.60, 51.19, 1:04.00, and 2:02.97. McKayla Smith took two first place finishes in the 50 and 100 yard freestyle events with times of 32.63 and 1:16.26. She also finishes third in the 100 individual medley with a time of 1:31.78. McKayla's times in the 50 free achieved the Minnesota "B" time level while both her other times reached the "C" time level. Jackson Boever took sixth in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 41.92, first in the 100 yard freestyle in 1:38.48, and fourth in the 50 yard backstroke with a time of 49.04. Jackson's backstroke time was a career best for him cutting more than 2 seconds off his previous best.

Thomas Roberts also tackled the full range of strokes by swimming the 50 yard freestyle, butterfly, breaststroke, and 100 yard individual medley events with times of 37.38, 43.13, 57.27, and 1:46.74. These times were good enough for three second place and one fourth place (in the 50 free) finishes. Thomas' time in the 50 free and fly achieved the Minnesota "C" time level and his times in the fly and breast were career best times for him.

Four Morris Area high school swimmers also joined the Tiger Sharks team for a summer workout: for the girls, Emma Roberts and Katie Monroe and for the boys Stefan and David Lemke In the 50 yard freestyle, Emma's time of 32.63 placed her second in her category, Stefan‚s 26.97 placed him third, while David's time of 26.95 placed him fifth in his category, all three swimmers‚ time reached the Minnesota "B" time level. Emma also cut 1.73 seconds from her time of a week ago. In the 100 yard freestyle, David's 1:00.35 placed him third, while Katie's 1:17.67 and Emma's 1:19.22 took third and fourth, respectively. David's time again reached the Minnesota "B" level, while Emma and Katies‚ reached the "C" level. In the 200 yard freestyle, Stefan's 2:10.25 took first as well as reaching the "B" time level. In the 100 yard breaststroke, Katie and Emma finished second and third with times of 1:32.35 and 1:47.53, respectively. David‚s 1:22.70 took first in the 100 yard butterfly and his 1:16.41 took second in the 100 yard backstroke as well as cutting 2.31 seconds off his time of a week ago. Katie and Emma also finished first and second in the100 yard individual medley with times of 1:46.73 and 1:35.21. Katie's breaststroke and IM as well as David's backstroke times all reached the Minnesota "C" time level. Katie‚s IM time bettered her time of a week ago by 1.11 seconds. Stefan took first in the long distance 500 yard freestyle with a Minnesota "B" time of 6:09.13.

The Sharks also fielded three relay teams. In the 200 yard free relay, the team of Emma Roberts, Stefan Lemke, Katie Monroe, and McKayla Smith took first in their category with a time of 2:11.83. In the 200 yard medley relay the A team of Stefan Lemke, David Lemke, Katie Monroe and McKayla Smith finished first with a time of 2:20.15, while the B team of Jackson Boever, Thomas Roberts, Breena Monroe, and Kristina Johnson took second with a time of 3:10.28.
