Tigers defeat Lakers for 2nd time this spring
The Morris Area baseball team defeated Minnewaska Area 7-1 on the road Thursday to sweep the Lakers in West Central Conference South action.
"The Tigers used excellent base running and situational hitting to build a 5-0 lead after three, then rode Eric Riley's right arm to a win," said coach Lyle Rambow.
In the first inning, Tyler Hansen led off with a grounder to first and beat the out. He stole second and scored on Tanner Berning's single to right.
The Tigers put up four runs in the second inning. It started when Mitch Carbert and Ryan Beyer singled. Riley laid down a perfect bunt and the throwing error scored Carbert. Beyer got a jump from third and scored on Tanner Rohloff's grounder. Then Riley scored on Hansen's grounder.
In the third, Darrick Henrichs walked and pinch runner Chris Boettcher took third when Carbert executed a hit-and-run single to right.
Beyer banged a deep sacrifice fly to center.
In the seventh inning, Jon Jallo doubled down the left field line and Jason Grasshoff pinch ran. Hansen beat out an infield single, Berning singled, and both runs scored on wild pitches.
"Our base running was a big factor," said Rambow. "We had just enough good hitting to build a 5-0 lead and Riley took over.
"We had an excellent game in the field behind Riley. Dustin Sauter was solid at short and Riley fielded great from the mound with four assists.
"Henrichs called a great game behind the plate."
Henrichs had 11 put outs on strike outs and Jallo had nine put outs at first.
"This was a good win for us," added Rambow. "We have an excellent rivalry with Minnewaska and our kids played well."
