Tigers face conference leading YME, Benson to close out regular season

The Morris Area volleyball team closed out the 2008 regular season with losses to the West Central Conference South leading teams, Benson and Yellow Medicine East.

Both teams, the Braves and the Sting, finished 11-1 in the conference. YME's loss came against Benson and Benson's loss was against Lac qui Parle Valley.

The Tigers are preparing for the section playoffs which begin Friday. Morris is the No. 4 seed and will open the playoffs against No. 5 seed Montevideo at 7:30 in Granite Falls.

No. 1 YME will play No. 8 Redwood Valley prior to the Morris Area versus Montevideo match.

No. 2 Benson hosts No. 7 Minnewaska at 6 p.m., followed by the No. 3 Lac qui Parle Valley versus No. 6 BOLD match.

The Section 3AA North tournament continues Tuesday, Oct. 28 in Montevideo.

The Tigers fought hard in Benson Monday night starting out with a 25-20 win over the Braves. Benson came back to win the next game 25-19. In the third game, Morris Area prevailed 26-24, but Benson forced a tie breaker with a 25-20 win in the fourth. In the fifth and final game, the Braves won the match 15-8.

Mary Rentz led the Tigers with 11 kills, four blocks, two ace serves, and eight digs.

Erin Schieler had nine kills, three blocks, and six digs.

Jenna Nelson had eight kills, one ace serve, two blocks, and 24 digs.

Alissa Melberg recorded seven kills, two blocks, and two digs.

Brianna Neuman had 34 set assists, along with three kills, four ace serves, one block, and seven digs.

Dani Staples recorded three kills, three blocks, and two digs.

Sara Beyer had three kills and one dig.

Heather Gagner had 13 digs, Brooke Anderson had 12 digs, and Kelsey Amundson had six.

The Tigers hosted the Sting Tuesday and dropped the match in three by scores of 25-13, 25-18, and 25-6.

Schieler had five kills, one ace serve, two blocks, and five digs for the Tigers.

Rentz had three kills, two blocks, and three digs.

Nelson had three kills, two blocks, and two digs.

Staples recorded one ace serve, two blocks, and one dig.

Neuman had eight set assists, one block, and four digs.

Melberg recorded two kills.

Fallon Meixel had one kill and one dig.

Anderson had four digs, Gagner had three, Amundson had two, Beyer had one, and Dani Schultz had one.
