Tigers fall to Bulldogs in home opener
The Tigers held the lead twice in the first half of their home opener, but Paynesville rallied to defeat Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta 38-14 Friday at Big Cat Stadium.
The Bulldogs improved to 2-0, while the Tigers fell to 0-2.
At halftime, the Tigers trailed by two at 16-14.
“We played a great first half,” said coach Kevin Pope. “We really controlled the line of scrimmage.”
After a slow start, Bulldogs’ quarterback Matthew Quade hooked up with receiver Nick Dingmann for four touchdowns.
A Paynesville fumble that ended up back in the Bulldogs’ possession for a gain of a couple yards was a turning point in the game.
“Some things didn’t bounce our way,” Pope said. “If we had a chance to make a big play, we didn’t capitalize on it.”
The Tigers turned the ball over twice on fumbles.
“We’ve got to improve on that,” added Pope.
Isaac Wente carried 29 times for 162 yards and he scored both of the Tigers’ touchdowns in the first half.
Pope felt that the team’s improvement since the opener at Minnewaska was noticeable.
“We played a good game. We made a great deal of improvement. We just didn’t play a complete game.”
