Tigers fall to Cobras in section team tournament
The Morris Area/Hancock/Chokio-Alberta wrestling team fell to the Section 3AA South No. 1 seed Windom Area/Mountain Lake-Buttterfield-Odin 37-28 Friday in Marshall.
The Tigers finished their year 8-4 as a team.
The Tigers' goal was to make it to the finals night for team competition. They did that and matched up well against the Cobras.
"The general consensus of all the Tiger coaches, fans and wrestlers was that it appeared we were right in the hunt," explained assistant coach Blaine Hill. "A couple of matches going the other way and the end result would be different. It was certainly something the Tigers can build on for next year."
The Cobras struck early with Mitchell Ascheman losing by a fall in 3:10 to Wyatt Stevens at 106 pounds.
Then Travis Ostby did his best to keep the score down against Joe Fischenich at 113, but the final score was a 12-3 loss.
Then Evan Nelson faced No. 8 ranked Jared Willaby at 120 pounds and had a tremendous match, but he still lost 7-2.
Dillan Johnson provided a little relief. He wrestled an outstanding match at 126 pounds defeating Jacob Suess 9-3.
Myles Smith also wrestled a very good match, but just couldn't quite get ahead of Blake Spinks at 132 pounds. He lost 10-6.
Jarid Berning also had a hard fought match at 138 pounds, but again came up short losing 8-2 to John Boyd. With the score in favor of the Cobras 19-3, the momentum began to turn the Tigers' way.
Seth Nelson started things out with a fall over Gavin Mutz in 4:27 at 145 pounds.
Then Tim Ostby pinned Andrew Larson in 1:34 at 152 to put the score at 19-15 Cobras.
But the Cobras again struck back. Jordan Thooft returned to the line-up at 160 pounds for the Tigers, but walked into a headlock and was pinned in 31 seconds by Tim Larson.
Connor Metzger got the points back with a fall in 5:19 over Stuart Blomgren at 170 pounds, but then the Cobras put the match away with back-to-back pins at 182 pounds and 195 pounds. Matt Willaby pinned Wade Ehlers in 2:32 and No. 9 ranked Vince Johnson pinned Tyler Moser in only 41 seconds. The score was 37-21 and there was no way the Tigers could come back to win.
Joel Harrison defeated Aaron Flatgard 5-0 at 220 pounds and Zach Gibson defeated Neil Litfin 10-1 at 285 pounds to round out the Tiger scoring.
The Tigers will now wrestle in the Section 3AA individual tournament on Friday and Saturday with the top two wrestlers earning a trip to the State Wrestling Tournament the following Friday and Saturday
