Tigers fall short in home opener
Morris Minnesota 607 Pacific Avenue 56267

The Melrose Dutchmen upended Morris Area / Chokio-Alberta 14-6 on Friday, Aug. 29 during the season opener in Morris.

Melrose was unable to get by the Morris defense on the ground, so the Dutchmen went to the air for both touchdowns. Blake Gerads was credited for both TDs, and quarterback Matt Beste had the successful two-point conversion in the third that put the Dutchmen up 14-0 just two minutes after the second half started.

Despite turning the ball over five times in the game, the Tigers didn’t give up and finally were able to get on the board midway through the fourth quarter on a 19 yard run by senior Trent Wulf. Wulf led the Tigers in rushing with 128 yards on 19 carries.

Quarterback Trent Marty was able to connect with his receivers on four occasions for a total of 84 yards. Leading receiver senior Bo Olson led the Tigers with a single 39 yard reception, followed by Noah Grove who had two catches for 23 yards.

Defensively, the Tigers were able to put pressure on the Melrose rushing crew, keeping the Dutchmen under 100 yards rushing on the night. Isaac Wente did work on defense, leading the Tigers in tackles with 11.

The next game for the Tigers is in Montevideo on Friday, Sept. 5 at 7 p.m.
