Tigers get back on winning track

After Monday's loss to Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa, the Morris Area volleyball team broke a losing streak Tuesday with a 3-0 win over Paynesville.

The Tigers conclude their regular schedule next week on the road Monday at Benson and hosting Yellow Medicine East Tuesday. Both the Braves and the Sting are 10-1 at the top of the conference standings. Morris Area is in the middle of the pack with a 6-6 West Central Conference South record.

The Tigers fell to the Jaguars, ranked fifth in the state in Class A, by game scores of 25-9, 25-20, and 25-17.

"B-B-E is a strong team," said coach Becky Hayden. "In the second and third games we made them work for their points."

Despite the loss, the Tigers were celebrating an accomplishment, recording zero missed serves for the first time this season.

Mary Rentz and Jenna Nelson led the Tigers with five kills apiece. Nelson had nine digs and Rentz had four.

Erin Schieler recorded four kills and one ace block.

Alissa Melberg had three kills and one ace block.

Dani Staples had three kills for the Tigers, along with one dig.

Brianna Neuman recorded 15 set assists, along with one ace serve and nine digs.

Fallon Meixel also had an ace serve for the Tigers.

Heather Gagner and Kelsey Amundson had three digs apiece, while Brooke Anderson, the team's libero, recorded nine.

Shawna Itzen had two set assists.

Paynesville 0

The Tigers returned to conference action Tuesday and picked up their first win after dropping four straight. Morris Area defeated the Bulldogs easily in the first game, 25-16, but had to battle to stay on top winning both of the next two games 28-26.

"We played a good match on senior night," said Hayden. "We served aggressively and had eight aces."

Nelson led the Tigers with a double double, recording 10 kills and 11 digs, along with two ace serves and one ace block.

Schieler had 10 kills as well, with five digs and one ace block.

Sara Beyer hit seven kills and picked up two digs.

Melberg recorded five kills, two ace blocks, and two digs.

Staples had five kills.

Neuman had 32 set assists, along with one kill, one ace block, one ace serve, and five digs.

Amundson and Rentz had five digs apiece, each recorded one ace serve.

Anderson had seven digs.

Gagner had three ace serves and eight digs.

Meixel had two digs and Shawna Itzen had two set assists.
