Tigers go to 2-0 on season
In Ortonville Friday, the Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta girls improved to 2-0 on the season by defeating the Trojans 81-45.
"Ortonville played hard from the start and got as close as 16-20 late in the first half before the Tigers broke it open," said coach Ken Gagner. "We were able to apply some pressure and we ended up scoring points in bunches. The pace of the game was chaotic at times, but we were able to slowly extend the lead.
"Ortonville has a very young team - no seniors are on the roster - but really gave good effort," said Gagner. "I look for them to improve as the season moves forward.
"We once again were able to spread the ball around and were led by juniors Mary Rentz and Nicole Gillespie who both hit 16 points for the evening," added Gagner. "The Tigers were one player shy of having five in double figures for the second game in a row."
Stef Strobel and Heather Gagner had 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Also scoring were Alissa Melberg with eight, Megan Dierks with six, Kelly Ritter and Kelsey Greenwaldt with five apiece, and Kelsey Amundson with four.
The Tigers made 12 of 14 free throws in the second half.
From the field the Tigers were shooting 49.23 percent.
Rentz and Jenna Nelson led the team with five rebounds each.
Rentz also led in assists with eight.
Gagner recorded four steals.
"The girls played with a lot of energy and it was a fun game to watch," concluded Gagner.
