Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta opened the 2012 softball season with a 10-7 win over Montevideo at home Tuesday.
McKenzie Van Batavia tossed all seven innings, giving up eight hits and two walks, while striking out four, to pick up the win for the Tigers.
"McKenzie did a nice job pitching and played well in the field under very cold conditions," said coach Mary Holmberg.
It was 40 degrees Tuesday afternoon with a windchill of 30.
The Tigers took an early 2-0 lead.
Van Batavia walked to lead off the game. Megan Mecklenburg came in as the courtesy runner and stole second and third before scoring on a ground ball by Sadie Fischer. Fischer also had a stolen base and scored.
Tracy Meichsner scored the Tigers' third run in the bottom of the third on ground balls by Fischer and Steph Hennen.
Montevideo scored two in the fourth and again in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead.
The Tigers answered in the bottom of the sixth with seven runs after sending 12 batters to the plate. Olivia Reimers led off with a walk, followed by back-to-back bunts by Nicole Strobel and Mecklenburg.
"Nicole and Megan laid down two very nice bunts," explained Holmberg.
Van Batavia then hit a two-RBI single. Back-to-back hits were recorded by Fischer and Hennen. Reimers hit a double for her second plate appearance.
"We came back from a one-run deficit to take a six-run lead," said Holmberg. "Credit goes to the girls for not giving up."
Montevideo closed the seventh with an additional three runs.
"They had some solid hits, but we made some nice defensive plays to get us out of the inning.
"Defensively, Strobel and Meichsner had cutts in the outfield," added Holmberg. "Jaimie Bergerson played well at first, as did Holly Amundson at second. Fischer had good range at the short-stop position.
"Brooke Johnson and Van Batavia worked well together and stayed focused under the cold conditions."
