The MAHACA Tigers competed in the Grant County Invitational Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 16.


Senior Dillan Johnson at 145 pounds was joined in the finals by junior Alec Gausman at 220 pounds. Neither was able to capture a title. Eight other Tigers placed and the Tigers took sixth overall out of 11 teams with 106 points. United (Dawson-Boyd-Lac Qui Parle Valley-Montevideo) took first place with 245 points.

Johnson was the No. 1 seed at 145 pounds and a returning champion from last year. In the opening round, Johnson defeated Ramon Lopez-Moen from Ottertail Central by a fall in :59 seconds. In the quarterfinals, Johnson defeated Jacob Shiltgen of Alexandria by a major decision 8-0. In the semifinals, Johnson was able to pin Greg Donabauer from Long Prairie-Grey Eagle in 5:25. In the finals, Johnson was pinned by Nik Borchert of Mille Lacs in 3:41.

Gausman started his trip to the finals in the semis, due to lack of wrestlers in the 220 pound weight class. Gausman pinned Cole Bungarden of United in :41 seconds. In the finals, Gausman lost by a close decision 10-7 to Buzz Miller of West Central Area.

The Tigers didn’t send a 106 pound wrestler to this tournament.

At 113 pounds, Matt Munsterman took fifth place after defeating Drake Swanson of United by a pin in 1:53.

Mitchell Ascheman lost in the fifth place match by a fall to United wrestler Donny Bethun in 3:55.

In the wrestlebacks, Jared Rohloff (126 pounds) defeated Hunter Summer of Mille Lacs by a decision 13-9, but then lost to David Ambriz of Long Prairie-Grey Eagle 7-5.

Phillip Messner lost to Dylan Schwartz of Ottertail Central in the 132 pound round. Messner lost by a decision 8-3.

At 138 pounds, Travis Ostby lost a close match to eventual champion Spencer Sulflow of United in the opening round. Ostby took fifth, defeating Tyler Ehnert of New York Mills by a decision 6-3.

At 152 pounds, Matthew Petty of Mille Lacs defeated Tiger Devin Robertson by a pin in 1:28 for fifth place in the tournament.

At 160 pounds, Jerid Berning went 0-2 in the tournament both by falls.

At 170 pounds, Jordan Thooft was the No. 2 seed for the Tigers. Thooft made it to the third place round where he was defeated by Mason Kwilinski of United by a score of 4-3.

Danny Tracy went 0-3 on the mat and Aaron Nelson was 1-2 in the 182 pound and 195 pound class, respectively.

At 285 pounds, Jacob Speer took fifth place as he beat TJ Waskosky of West Central Area for the second time that day by a deciding score of 2-0.
