With the win the Tigers improve to 17-6 overall on the season.

“The Thunder Hawks gave the Tigers quite a battle, actually carrying a five-point lead late in the game before the Tigers rallied for the win,” explained coach Mark Torgerson. “Trailing by five with less than three minutes to go, the Tigers got a pair of big three-point baskets from Chandler Erickson and Logan Manska to eventually take the lead. A late free throw by Nic Vipond gave the Tigers a two- point lead with just under 20 seconds to go.

“From there Monte guard Ryan Maroney was fouled and had a chance to tie the game with a one-and-one opportunity at the free-throw line,” Torgerson said. “Maroney, however, missed the free throw and Vipond got the rebound forcing another Monte foul with 1.3 seconds left. Vipond missed the free throw, but there was little that Monte could do as the buzzer sounded.

“The first half saw the Thunder Hawks jump out to a 12-4 lead before the Tigers finally got on track offensively, led by five early points by guard Jacob Torgerson,” Torgerson continued. “Logan Manska also tallied a three pointer to get the Tigers even closer. “Both teams played the game with defensive intensity which forced very few easy scoring chances. Monte had a balanced scoring attack, led in the first half by Troy Diggins’ seven points.”

The Tigers trailed 23-21 at halftime.

“The Tigers changed their defensive approach in the second half as they went to a trapping zone defense,” Torgerson said. “Eventually it would help the Tigers take the lead at the midway point of the second half.

“Just about the time the Tigers looked like they had the momentum to pull away, the Thunder Hawks stepped it up a notch,” added Torgerson. “Jordan Thompson tallied 10 of his game-high 15 points late in the game and Monte eventually took the lead away from the Tigers. Sophomore Monte center Spencer Hildahl also provided offensive spark with six second-half points inside the paint. “The Tigers, however, kept their composure and executed just enough down the stretch to eek out the win.”

The Thunder Hawks had a 27-22 edge on the boards. Nic Vipond had a team-high five rebounds for the Tigers. Austin Dierks tallied just three rebounds for the night, but added six blocked shots.

Logan Manska led the Tigers in steals with four and Chandler Erickson led the Tigers in assists with five.

Manska and Dierks were the only Tigers in double figures with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

The Tigers play their final regular-season game Tuesday against New London-Spicer in Morris.
