Tigers split a home triangular, Gibson gets 100th win
The Morris Area/Hancock/Chokio-Alberta wrestling team split in a triangular Thursday night. The Tigers defeated Montevideo in the opening match 35-25, but fell to fourth ranked Wabasso/Red Rock Central 50-16 in the final match of the night. One of the highlights for the night was Tiger senior Zach Gibson earning his 100th career victory.
The Montevideo match could very well have implications for section seeding and the Tiger coaches knew the team had to wrestle hard.
Things started slow though. Mitchell Ascheman lost a close match 8-5 to Christian Kanten at 106. Then Travis Ostby lost 13-5 to Dan Macziewski at 113. Devin Robertsen picked up a forfeit at 120 and then Montevideo rattled off three straight wins to take a 19-6 lead.
Evan Nelson lost to Spencer Sulflow 11-4 at 126, Dillan Johnson lost to Logan Knoshal 4-3 at 132, and Myles Smith lost to Mitch Kwilinski by fall in 5:36 at 138.
But the Tigers roared back with four wins of their own to pull ahead 23-19. Seth Nelson started the rally with a 5-0 win over Mason Kwilinski at 145. His win was followed by a 10-1 win by Tim Ostby over Cody Hiepler at 152. Then Jordan Thooft defeated Justin Welling 16-3 at 160 pounds and Connor Metzger pinned Hans Dessurealt in 53 seconds at 170.
Wade Ehlers lost to Tanner Lindeman by pin in 37 seconds at 182 and Montevideo was back on top. This was a short-lived lead when Tyler Moser and Joel Harrison both received forfeits. There was a double forfeit at 285.
The win raised the Tigers' record to 7-1.
In the feature match of the night, the Tigers had the misfortune of taking on the fourth ranked Wabasso/Red Rock Central Bobcats. The Tigers actually split the first eight matches evenly with the Bobcats, but the cats were pinning to win and the Tigers were not.
Mitchell Ascheman defeated Brakken Bierl 4-1 at 106 and Travis Ostby was pinned in 1:49 by Spencer Jennings at 113.
Devin Robertsen was pinned by Brandon Goblirsch in 30 seconds at 120 and Evan Nelson defeated Derek Christians 4-2 at 126.
Dillan Johnson defeated Dominic Ovrada 5-1 at 132 and Jerid Berning lost to Tanner Rholik 17-0 at 138.
Tim Ostby won 13-3 over Jordan Schropfier at 145. This was Tim's first match of the season wrestling at 145.
Then it was all Bobcats for the next six matches. Seth Nelson lost to Mitchell Schroepher by a fall in 1:16 at 152 and Jordan Thooft was pinned in 4:48 at 160 pounds. Connor Metzger lost to Blake Altermatt 5-3 at 170 and Wade Ehlers was pinned in 2:50 at 182. Tyler Moser lost by fall to Shane Irlbeck in 29 seconds at 195. Joel Harrison lost by fall via Cody Weich in 1:37 at 220.
Finally, Zach Gibson defeated Alex Schroepfer 3-0 at 285 in the last match of the night. Then the crowd was told it was Zach's 100th career victory, a very important milestone in a high school wrestler's career.
The Tigers will not see the Bobcats again as they are in a different class for tournaments. The Tigers will host Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City Tuesday night in Hancock for the final dual of the regular season.
