The Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta girls' basketball team upset the No. 4-seed Bulldogs 57-50 Thursday in Paynesville to advance in the Section 6AA South Tournament.
In other sub-section games, the sub-section's top seed, New London-Spicer made easy work of St. John's Prep, 71-45; No. 3-seed Eden Valley-Watkins defeated Benson 48-28; and Litchfield, the No. 2 seed, downed Minnewaska 74-48.
The winners all advance to Saturday's semifinal games at St. John's University in Collegeville. The Tigers will face the Wildcats at 2 p.m., followed by the Litchfield and Eden Valley-Watkins game at 3:30 p.m. The semifinals winners meet on Tuesday at SJU for the sub-section championship.
"The Tigers started off quickly against the Dogs," explained coach Dale Henrich. "We made the extra passes for easy shots and took a quick lead.
"As we got into a little foul trouble, the Dogs came back with a couple steals and lay ups to take a tie into halftime."
The score was 23-23 at the break.
"The Tigers really played good defense throughout the game and our rebounding was impressive on both ends," Henrich added. "We really hustled after the ball, we looked like a team not ready to be done with the season yet.
"A number of girls really stepped up at different times with big shots, strong rebounding and put backs, and strong defense."
Katie Holzheimer led the Tigers with a double double: 22 points and 10 rebounds. MaKenzie Smith added 14 points and seven boards and Tracy Meichsner had eight points and 10 rebounds.
