Tigers wrestle state- ranked Falcons

The Morris Area/ Hancock/Chokio-Alberta wrestling team tackled two West Central Conference South rivals Tuesday, Jan. 27 in Granite City. The Tigers faced three state-ranked wrestlers from Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City, the team which is ranked fourth in Class A.

Morris/H/C-A 6

Tanner Berning and Eric Goette picked up wins for the Tigers against the Falcons.

At 135 pounds, Goette won a 5-3 overtime decision over Scott Litzau.

Berning, wrestling at 152 pounds, won a 4-2 decision over Ryan Larson.

The Tigers gave up 30 points by forfeiting five matches, even though Corey O'Keefe was back in action for his first match of the year after an injury.

O'Keefe, wrestling at 160 pounds, lost by fall in 1:32 to Travis Frederiksen, ranked fourth in the state at 152 pounds.

Six other Tigers saw time on the mats.

At 103, Jordan Thooft lost a 9-1 major decision to Jesse Whitcomb.

At 112, Jon Zierke lost by fall in 0:25 to Larry Bomstad.

At 140, Josh Nelson dropped a 6-5 decision to Matt Meyer, ranked sixth in the state at 130 pounds.

At 171, Wade Ehlers lost by fall in 1:32 to Travis Whitcomb.

At 215, Jeff Knobloch lost by technical fall to Micah Larson, ranked seventh in the state Class A polls in the 171-pound class.

In the heavyweight match, James Newhouse lost by fall in 1:16 to Dylan Nelson.

Tony Domnick, Goette, Berning, and Zach Gibson all notched pins for the Tigers against Montevideo.

Domnick got the Tigers off to a great start at 103 pounds, winning by fall in 5:18 over Jake Bednar.

Goette, wrestling at 140 pounds, won by fall in 5:32 over Cody Hiepler.

Berning won by fall in 0:56 over Thomas Stoekman in the 152-pound match.

Gibson, wrestling at 215, won by fall in 2:50 over Jordan Welling.

Nelson and Ehlers also picked up points for the Tigers.

Nelson, wrestling at 135, won an 8-7 decision over Jesse Mijares.

Ehlers won by forfeit at 171 pounds.

At 112, Thooft dropped an 11-0 major decision to Mitchell Kwilinski.

At 119, Zierke lost by fall in 0:52 to Tim Macziewski.

At 160 pounds, Ryan Beyer lost by fall in 0:47 to Isaac Sulflow.

At 189, Knobloch dropped an 11-2 major decision to Thomas Joyce.

At 285, Newhouse lost by fall in 5:00 to Jordan Solting.

The Tigers were open in three matches against Montevideo.
