Time off pays for Tiger runners
The Morris Area Cross Country team had nearly two weeks off between meets. The runners used that time to condition and practice. Coach Dale Henrichs was very pleased with the results following successful outings at Milaca and Ortonville.
The Morris Area runners were among nearly 3,500 participants representing over 100 schools at the 39th Annual Milaca Mega Cross Country Meet Saturday at the Stones Throw Golf Club.
The Tigers' Stefan Lemke placed first in Class A, while finishing third overall.
As a team, the Tiger boys took third place in a field of 23 teams. All seven Morris Area runners finished in the top half of the 128 participants.
Lemke finished the race in 17:09.4. Roy Reese placed seventh with a time of 18:17.0. Austin Schieler came in 27th with a time of 19:18.7. Daniel Tiernan took 37th place with a time of 20:00.3. In 39th place was Nathan Fangmeier in 20:06.0. John Zierke was 58th in 21:07.9 and Matt Cotter was 60th in 21:11.8.
The varsity boys' team championships went to White Bear Lake in Class AAAA, Red Wing in Class AAA, Long Prairie-Grey Eagle in Class AA, and Trinity River Ridge in Class A.
Mason Ferlic of Mounds Park Academy had the fastest boys' time of 16:43.8.
The Tiger girls finished in 14th place of 28 Class A teams competing.
Sarah Kuhn finished in 36th place out of the 136 runners in Class A. She crossed the finish line in 17:57.2. Monserrat Mendez was 68th in 19:12.0. Adrianela Mendez finished 70th in 19:26.6. Makenzie Smith took 74th place with a time of 19:37.8. Julia Sauder was 80th in 20:01.8 and Tahni Jungst was 84th in 20:34.9.
Winners of the varsity girls' races were Andover in Class AAAA, Monticello in Class AAA, Holy Family Catholic in Class AA, and Paynesville in Class A.
Individually, senior Heidi Peterson of Sartell-St. Stephen successfully defended her Class AAA title with a time of 14:28.2 over 4,000 meters. She won in 15:12.0 last year.
Three Tigers ran in the Junior Varsity race with all classes from A to AAAA. Alex Sinclair finished with a time of 21:36. Steve Jungst had a time of 22:18. Mitch Carbert finished in 25:19.
Jacob Erickson ran in the 10th grade race and finished with a time of 21:53.
Ninth grade results were not available, but unofficial times for Gage Anderson, Caleb Sanderson, and Andrew Rentz were 21:35, 23:10, and 23:46 respectively.
In the eighth grade race, Aaron Goulet finished the shorter race in 30th place of 156 runners with a time of 8:02.
Chris Tiernan had a time of 15:58 in the seventh grade race.
Both cross country teams won at the Ortonville Invitational Monday.
Tiger boys placed in the top four positions to help Morris Area to a first-place finish out of six teams participating.
Lemke, Reese, Schieler, and Tiernan were the first four to cross the finish line. Their times were 16:14, 16:57, 17:44, and 17:55, respectively. Cotter's 12th place time of 18:43 was the fifth time making up the team score of 19.
Gage Anderson came in 13th with a time of 18:57 and Zierke was in 14th with a 19:03. Steve Jungst was 19th in 20:03 and Sinclair was 20th in 20:18. Jacob Anderson took 22nd place in 20:41 and Sean Brustuen was 23rd in 20:45. Carbert placed 31st in 23:23.
Ortonville took second place with a team score of 49 and Yellow Medicine East was third with a 76. Other teams with incomplete scores were Milbank, Hillcrest Lutheran Academy, and Wheaton.
The girls edged Milbank by one point to take first with a team score of 27.
Sarah Kuhn finished the girls' race in second place with a time of 17:45. Monserrat Mendez was seventh in 18:43. Adrianela Mendez took ninth in 19:20. Smith placed 11th in 19:26. Sauder placed 13th in 19:29. Tahni Jungst took 15th in 20:44.
Other teams with incomplete scores were Yellow Medicine East, Ortonville, and Hillcrest Lutheran Academy.
In the junior high boys' 2000m race, Goulet took first place with a time of 7:46. Sanderson finished third in 7:57. Rentz placed sixth in 8:13. Chris Tiernan was 19th in 9:03.
