UMAC Game of the Week: Minnesota Morris at St. Scholastica - Women's Basketball

ST. PAUL -- Today marks the debut of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Game of the Week feature. Each week throughout the conference portion of the season one contest will be selected and highlighted as the UMAC Game of the Week.

The first ever UMAC Game of the Week will take place on Friday, Jan. 11 as the University of Minnesota, Morris will meet St. Scholastica in women's basketball action at 5:30 p.m. The game will feature the two teams voted to finish one, two in the pre-season poll.

Both teams have three wins on the season with the Cougars coming off a 98-37 win over Crown in the UMAC opener. St. Scholastica is coming off a 55-49 loss to Northland on the road.

ABOUT THE COUGARS

The Cougars are led by Kendra Wycoff and Emily Auch offensively, who average 13.5 and 9.0 points per game. Abby Fragodt is averaging 9.9 rebounds per game, along with 6.3 points per game. On average one of every three shots is a three pointer for the Cougars who have shot 216 on the year.

Morris is shooting 35.3 percent from the field and averaging 63.1 points per game. The Cougars have turned their opponent an average of 17.9 times per game thanks to 94 steals and 39 blocks on the year.

ABOUT THE SAINTS

The Saints won 10 conference games for the first time in program history last season and finished third in the UMAC standings. This season, head coach Stacy Deadrick returns most of her talented back court in junior Kayla Heisler, who was the 2010-11 UMAC Freshman of the Year, and sophomore Mariah Hovick, who was the 2011-12 Co-UMAC Freshman of the Year. Also returning in the backcourt is Sammy Doucette, who missed most of last season due to injury.

In the first 12 games, the Saints are led in scoring by junior forward Erin Frase, who is the only player averaging in double figures at 11.9 points per game. Frase has led the team in scoring the last two games.

SERIES HISTORY

Minnesota Morris ended the Saints' season a year ago with a 71-63 victory in the UMAC Tournament semfinals in Morris.

The last time the two teams met at Reif Gymnasium in Duluth, the Saints defeated the Cougars in overtime 66-62. The win snapped a 13-game losing streak to Morris.

The last seven meetings in Duluth have been decided by eight points or less, including five by four points or less and two overtime games.
