UMAC Game of the Week: St. Scholastica vs. Minnesota Morris- Softball
ST. PAUL -- The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Game of the Week is a feature that takes place each week throughout the conference portion of the season with one contest being selected and highlighted as the UMAC Game of the Week.
The week's UMAC Game of the Week is schedule to take place on Saturday, April 20 as St. Scholastica and Minnesota will meet in UMAC softball action. Due to weather conditions the game has been moved indoors to the Vadnais Sports Dome in Vadnais Heights, Minn. with a 10 p.m. start time.
The two teams finished first and second in the UMAC standings in 2012 with the Saints topping the Cougars to win both regular season and conference tournament championship. In the 2013 UMAC Preseason Poll the two teams were predicted to repeat their 2012 finishes.
About the Saints
The St. Scholastica softball team has yet to play a home game this season and it is somewhat likely it will not be able to play on its regular home field this season, due to the weather this spring. The Saints have a pair of four-game winning streaks this season, but have two losses in their last three games. The Saints already have two UMAC losses this season and they haven’t had more than two conference losses in a season since 2008.
Freshman Rendi Johnson leads the team at the plate with a .382 batting average and 15 RBIs. In fact, the top four hitters in the lineup are freshmen. Kasandra McCabe is tied for the team lead with two home runs and is right behind Johnson with 14 RBIs. Freshman Andrea Mogren in 13-for-13 in stolen base attempts.
Senior Darcy Roach leads the pitching staff with four wins and 34 strikeouts. Opponents are hitting just .221 against her.
About the Cougars
The Cougars softball team will be back indoors for their six games this weekend. Once again start times are out of the ordinary as they start the weekend with a doubleheader against St. Scholastica Saturday night at 10 p.m. in Vadnais Heights. The Cougars are 6-1 in the UMAC, tied for first place. St. Scholastica is the preseason favorite to win the UMAC but currently the Cougars sit 1.5 games up on the Saints.
Minnesota Morris will look for their pitching to continue to work deep into games and limit the amount of big hits they give up. The Cougars are 9-1 in their last ten games and have given up more than three runs just four times.
Cassie Sowada has been on fire since April began hitting 10-15 and driving in seven. She has raised her average from .231 to .464 during the streak.
