2013 Festival of Spanish Language Cinema: Even the Rain/También la lluvia
The 2013 Festival of Spanish Language Cinema presents Even the Rain/También la lluvia on Saturday, Oct. 26, at 2 p.m. and on Monday, Oct. 28, at 9 p.m. at the Morris Theatre. Films are shown in Spanish with English subtitles and are free and open to the public.
Winds of Change—UMM Symphonic Winds
On Sunday, Oct. 27, at 3 p.m. the UMM Symphonic Winds will present Winds of Change in the Humanities Fine Arts Recital Hall. The UMM Symphonic Winds, under the direction of Simon Tillier, is the premier large instrumental ensemble at UMM. Made up of the University’s most talented wind, brass, and percussion players, the ensemble performs works from all musical periods, cultures, and styles, featuring both core and contemporary repertoire and new pieces by emerging composers. This concert will feature works by British composers from the last 100 years.
Disability Alliance Team Screening: FixedOn Monday, Oct. 28, there will be a screening of the film Fixed at 7:30 p.m. in Imholte Hall 109. This screening is hosted by the Disability Alliance Team.
Café Scientifique: “Tigers in the Potholes; tiger salamanders in your ponds and window wells”On Tuesday, Oct. 29, Assistant Professor of Biology Heather Waye will present the next Café Scientifique discussion at 6 p.m. at Common Cup Coffeehouse. The title of Waye's talk is “Tigers in the potholes; tiger salamanders in your ponds and window wells.” The discussion will cover what is known about the tiger salamander and its role in the prairie pothole ecosystem.
Sigma Tau Delta Halloween ReadingOn Tuesday, Oct. 29, the English Honor Society Sigma Tau Delta will host its annual Halloween Reading event at 7 p.m. in the Student Center’s Turtle Mountain Cafe. The event consists of reading segments of Halloween books and a costume contest.
Jane Addams ProjectThe Jane Addams Project is a cross-cultural discussion circle for Spanish and English-speaking Morris residents and UMM students. The discussion will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 29, at 7:30 p.m. in Imholte Hall 111.
Spanish Conversation TablePlease join us at La Mesa de Conversación en la Universidad de Minnesota, Morris, otherwise known as the Spanish Conversation Table at UMM, on Wednesday, Oct. 30, from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Student Center’s Turtle Mountain Cafe. All are welcome! Students, faculty, staff, and community members have casual conversations in Spanish about a variety of topics. Meet new people and improve your Spanish!
Computer Science Presentation: Joe Einertson ’13On Wednesday, October 30, Joe Einertson ’13 will present “Building Fast, Modern Web Applications with Node.js” at 8 p.m. in Science 1020. Come learn why major web companies are switching to Node, how a singlethreaded server can serve 10,000 concurrent connections, and how you can build a Web 2.0 application in 50 lines of code. Light refreshments will be served.
Trick or CanOn Thursday, Oct. 31, UMM students will be going door-to-door in the Morris community collecting donations for the Stevens County Food Shelf from 7 to 8:30 p.m. While the Stevens County Food Shelf is requesting donations of money or personal hygiene products, nonperishable food items are also welcome.
Mixed Student RecitalOn Thursday, Oct. 31, there will be a mixed student recital at 7:30 p.m. in the Humanities Fine Arts Recital Hall. This regular concert series features UMM instrumental and vocal students performing varied repertoire. Admission is free, and no tickets are required.
CAC Films Presents The Rocky Horror Picture ShowOn Thursday, Oct. 31, CAC Films will host its annual midnight screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show in the Student Center’s Edson Auditorium. The film begins at 11:59 p.m.
Repairing Relations: DakotaWicohan and UMM Revitalizing Dakota Language and Life WaysOn Friday, Nov. 1, Assistant Professor of Psychology Heather J. Peters and Teresa Peterson ’91 will present “Repairing Relations: DakotaWicohan and UMM Revitalizing Dakota Language and Life Ways” at 3:30 p.m. in Imholte Hall 109. They will discuss the partnership that has evolved between UMM and Dakota Wicohan, a native nonprofit designed to revitalize Dakota language and life ways. The collaboration evaluates the effects of Dakota language and life ways revitalization. Come hear about this collaboration and specific findings related to their research.

2013–14 Performing Arts Series: Zenon Dance CompanyOn Saturday, Nov. 2, Zenon Dance Company will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the Student Center’s Edson Auditorium. As both an internationally renowned dance group and a leader in dance education, Zenon promises a captivating stage experience. This will be the third performance in UMM’s 2013–14 Performing Arts Series.
