Humanities Fine Arts Gallery 2010 Celebration Exhibition

A 2010 Celebration exhibition that tells the story of the Morris campus through artifacts, photographs, and personal memorabilia opened in the Humanities Fine Arts (HFA) Gallery on Wednesday, Aug. 25. Items on display include a photo of Mother Mary Joseph who established an American Indian boarding school on the Morris campus in 1887, survey equipment used for the construction of West Central School of Agriculture and Experiment Station buildings in the 1920s, and "beanies" worn by UMM freshmen in the 1960s during orientation week. Michael Eble, associate professor of studio art and HFA Gallery curator, organized and designed the exhibit in conjunction with the 2010 Celebration Committee. Dian and Andy Lopez, committee co-chairs and professors emeriti of computer science, encourage the campus, community, and visitors to view the exhibit. "The exhibit will bring back memories for former students and staff of the West Central School of Agriculture and the University of Minnesota, Morris, as well as the community of Morris, as we celebrate more than 100 years of campus history." Special viewings of the exhibit are scheduled for Founders Weekend, Sept. 23-26 and Homecoming Weekend, Oct. 8-10, and the exhibit can also be viewed during regular Gallery hours: Monday-Thursday 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Fridays 9 a,m. until 6 p.m. Saturdays 1 until 4 p.m. The 2010 Celebration exhibit runs through Oct. 16.

Performing Arts Series

In recognition of their musical excellence, the Minnesota-based, nine-member male a cappella ensemble, Cantus, has been chosen as Classical Minnesota Public Radio's 2010-11 Artists-in-Residence. They will perform on Friday, Sept. 10 at 7:30 p.m. in Edson Auditorium. The Washington Post hails the ensemble's sound as having both "exalting finesse" and "expressive power," and refers to their music-making as "spontaneous grace." One of America's finest professional vocal chamber ensembles, the group's repertoire spans all periods and genres, including contemporary works, art songs, early music, world music, and pop.

Cougar Fest

The campus and the community are invited to join the fun during the seventh annual Cougar Fest on Saturday, Sept. 11. The free event features activities for all ages and an exciting afternoon of Cougar football. Cougar Fest begins just outside of Big Cat Stadium at 11 a.m. with free pre-kickoff activities for the whole family, including inflatable games. Pounce, the Cougars' mascot, will be present for photos and to prepare the crowd for cheering the Cougars on to victory. All fans receive free game admission. The Morris Cougars take on the Westminster College Griffins at noon in Big Cat Stadium. The day's festivities also include halftime entertainment and a halftime drawing for prizes. Concessions will be available beginning at 11 a.m. and during the game. Don't miss the fun. Go Cougars!
