University of Minnesota, Morris to celebrate 51st commencement

MORRIS – More than 375 University of Minnesota, Morris students will receive their degrees during the 51st Commencement on Saturday, May 10. The ceremony will take place on the campus mall (rain site is the P.E. Center) at 1:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend the ceremony, watch the event streamed online, or listen on KMRS/KKOK radio.

The Symphonic Winds, under the direction of Simon Tillier, instructor of music, and the Concert Choir, under the direction of Christina Armendarez ’00, assistant professor of music, will perform prior to and throughout the ceremony.

In recognition of the campus’ origins as an American Indian boarding school, the Northern Wind Singers (Woodland Ojibwe) will perform a Native American Honor Song to recognize and pay tribute to the Class of 2014. Anishinaabe Language Instructor Gabe Desrosiers, Lake of the Woods, Ontario, Canada, is the lead singer, composer for the group and the keeper of the drum.

Chancellor Jacqueline R. Johnson will provide the welcome and recognition of special guests, and University of Minnesota Regent Abdul M. Omari will give additional remarks. As the 2014 recipient of the Curtis H. Larson Award, Molly Donovan, Minneapolis, will speak on behalf of the graduates.

Peter Bell, distinguished author, community leader and former member of the University of Minnesota Board of Regents, will serve as the 2014 Commencement speaker.

After the conferring of degrees, University of Minnesota, Morris Alumni Association president Donnay Green will welcome the new graduates into the University of Minnesota, Morris Alumni Association. Following the ceremony, a reception will be held in the Student Center’s Oyate Hall.

Commencement guests are invited to view the 2014 Senior Art Show Exhibition II in the Humanities Fine Arts Gallery before or after the ceremony.
