Vernon LeRoy Jonson, age 77, of St. James died on Monday, May 26, 2014, at Pleasant View Good Samaritan Center in St. James. Funeral services were held Saturday, May 31, 2014 at St. James Catholic Church in St. James with Father Thien Nguyen officiating. Visitation was at the church on Saturday. A Christian Mothers Rosary was recited. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in St. James at a later date.

Vernon LeRoy Jonson was born in St. James on January 30, 1937, the son of Roy and Verna (Kuehl) Jonson. At age 6, he moved, with his family, to Wichita, Kansas, where he attended and graduated from school. He went on to receive a liberal arts degree from the University of Wichita. He returned to Minnesota and on August 13, 1966, was united in marriage to Celestine "Sally" (Zender) Grev. They made their home in the Morris area where Vern worked for the Savings & Loan for several years before going to work for the lumberyard, Morris Lumber and Millworks. He retired in 2007 and in 2008 moved back to St. James.
Vernon enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing cards and chess. He was the handyman at the apartments in Morris.
He is survived by his wife, Sally Jonson of St. James; step-children, Douglas (Penny) Grev of St. Paul, Renee (Bill) Sheehan of Alameda, CA, Rita Grev & Tate Ferguson of Minneapolis, Roger Grev & Donna Toft of Columbus, OH, Randall (Amy Lu) Grev of Taipei, Taiwan; grandchildren Matthew & James Grev, Jonathan, Kelly & David Sheehan, Casey & Celestine Grev, Alison & Lena Grev; sister, Janet (Ross) Halliday of Scottsdale, AZ, brother, Bob (Carol) Jonson of Dallas, TX, brother-in-law, Galen Olmstead of Washington, DC and several nieces & nephews. He is preceded in death by parents and sister Kathy Olmstead.
