VFW starts season 2-0
The Morris VFW Post 5039 baseball team opened the season with two District 5 wins over Alexandria II and Willmar I.
Morris vs Alexandria II
Morris opened their season June 6 with an 11-0 five-inning win over Alexandria II on the road.
Alex Erickson and Eric Riley combined on a one-hitter in posting the shut-out. Erickson pitched three hitless innings, walking two and striking out six. Riley finished up, giving up one hit with no walks and three strike outs.
Offensively, Post 5039 scored five times in the first and added four more in the second to put the game out of reach.
In the first, the first five hitters in the order reached base and scored. There was a single by Erickson, a double by Tanner Berning, singles by Ryan Beyer and Riley, and a walk to Nate Gibson.
In the second the big hits were singles by Erickson and Beyer, a triple by Riley, and a single by Mitch Carbert.
For the game Erickson, Berning and Beyer each had three hits and Riley had two.
Morris also won the second game of the evening. The second game is five innings and does not count toward the district standings.
In this game Post 5039 came from behind for an 8-5 victory.
Travis Rinkenberger picked up the win in relief of Morris starter Evan Schultz. Rinkenberger pitched three innings, giving up one unearned run on one hit, one walk, and struck out two.
Morris trailed 2-1 going into the third inning before they scored six runs to take the lead for good. Walks to Schultz and Ethan Bruer started the rally and Mitch Kill sacrificed the runners to second and third. Cole Riley, Erickson, Berning, and Beyer then added RBI hits with another run scoring on an error.
Morris added another run in the fifth on a double by Kill.
Morris vs Willmar I
Morris VFW Post 5039 improved to 2-0 with a come-from-behind 5-4 victory over Willmar I Tuesday at Chizek Field in Morris.
Morris scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for the win.
Willmar I took a 1-0 lead off of Morris starter Eric Riley in the top of the first, but Post 5039 tied the score in the bottom half of the inning when Erickson walked, Berning singled, and Tyler Hansen walked to load the bases. Riley then brought in Erickson with a sacrifice fly to right field.
Willmar I came back with two runs in the third for a 3-1 lead.
Morris closed to within 3-2 when Riley led off the fourth with a single, stole second, and scored on a Jon Jallo single.
Willmar I added an insurance run in the top of the sixth before Morris started their comeback. Riley again led off with a single, stole second, and went to third on a throwing error. Nate Gibson then walked and stole second. After a Morris batter was retired, Jallo came through with a clutch single to drive in both runs and tie the score. Pinch runner Evan Schultz then stole second and again advanced to third when the throw from the catcher went into center field. Cole Riley reached on a Willmar error and then Schultz came in to score the winning run on an errant pick-off attempt at first.
Erickson struck out the side in the top of the seventh as he gained the win in relief of Riley.
Jallo had two hits and three RBIs and E. Riley had two hits and one RBI to lead the Post 5039 offense.
In the five-inning game Willmar I defeated Morris by a score of 5-2. Ethan Bruer pitched a complete game for Morris, giving up four earned runs on nine hits, two walks, and one strikeout.
Rinkenberger and Hansen drove in the two runs for Morris and Beyer and Erickson also hit safely for Post 5039.
