Wednesday's Area Weather: A chilly beginning to 2010
The Christmas weather wasn't what most of us wanted for traveling. I talked to many people who didn't travel as they had wanted to over the Christmas holiday. Heavy snow and even some freezing mist or drizzle caused the roads to be difficult to travel on from Dec. 23-26.
Snowfall totals ranged from 10" in Morris, 24.2" in Duluth, Chaska 17", Morgan 16", Olivia 15.7", Willmar 13.8", Redwood Falls 13.2", Cold Spring 12.6", Melrose 12", Albany 12", Marshall 12", Alexandria 11", Little Falls 11", Fergus Falls 10" and Glenwood 10".
Things finally quieted down by Sunday after a nearly four-day snow event. There were reports of numerous accidents around the state. In St. Cloud, 12.7" of snow fell during this snowstorm. So far St. Cloud reports 18.2" of snow in December.
This is the sixth snowiest December on record, with still a chance of more snow before Thursday. However, it doesn't look like any great chances for snow the rest of the month. We could see a few flurries possibly on Thursday.
I don't think many of us will mind if the New Year is quieter than our Christmas! Be safe and have a great New Year!
WEATHER HISTORY
In 2005 a large swath of snow fell in the 6- to 8-inch range from approximately north of a line from Madison to Redwood Falls, to Glencoe to Chanhassen, and to Andover to Woodbury. Even heavier snowfall occurred west of a line from Granite Falls to Willmar where reports of between 8 to 11 inches were reported. In addition, in the Willmar area several vehicles were reported in the ditch. A semi-truck also rolled onto its side.
WEATHER FACTS
Blue Canyon, California receives on average nearly 241 inches of snow annually and is the snowiest place in the U.S.
