Wednesday's Area Weather: Not great weather for viewing Northern Lights
Morris Minnesota 607 Pacific Avenue 56267

I have had several people contact me this week about the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis. The weather isn't going to be the best for viewing them this week, but I want to make you aware of them in case we get some breaks in the cloud cover.

On a yearly basis, the Northern Lights are at their peak in September and March. The Lights can best be seen at around midnight. In the longer term, "auroral displays are correlated with an 11-year cycle in sunspot activity and other perturbations of the sun; the more restless the sun, the more aurorae." This year won't be one of the best years, but you should be able to see them nonetheless. The next maximum in solar activity will be in about 2012.

Of course, the weather plays a big factor in viewing the Lights. The Aurora Borealis occurs very high up in the atmosphere, and if there are clouds in the way you will not see anything. Lastly, don't forget this coming weekend we spring ahead as Daylight Saving Time Begins at 2 a.m. Sunday morning. Set those clocks ahead one hour this weekend!
