Wednesday's Area Weather: Summer's here! Rain may be, too
Summer arrived at 6:28 a.m., Monday morning with the summer solstice. We are officially into summer now.
It was a summery weekend for Father's Day Weekend. Temperatures were pleasant both Saturday and Sunday. I know the golf courses were busy around the area, along with tennis courts, bike trails, and sidewalks as people were out enjoying the nice weather with their dads. I know a lot of you were grilling on Sunday, too.
By the way, the clean-up continues in both Wadena and Almora. As we all know by now, it was a tragic day in the weather around the state last week. Three people died from the outbreak of tornadoes across the state in three separate areas. Up to 20 tornadoes were reported around the state. Some of these tornadoes could potentially be in the EF-3 category or higher intensity. That would equate to winds of 135 to 165 mph. If the National Weather Service classifies them as EF-4's, that would equate to winds of 166 to 200 mph.
Personnel from the NWS have been on location assessing the damage. Friends who live in those two towns say that things are coming along with the clean-up, but it will take some time. As a friend in Wadena told me, people are coming to terms with things after the initial shock, and they are starting to have some "lighter moments." We need to have some of those "lighter moments" in life to get through the difficult times. We are all thinking of the residents in those communities.
In 2002, heavy rain hit the state once again. Just a few weeks after torrential rains hit the area, another round of heavy rain hit northern Minnesota. Up to eight inches fell in a two-day period in small parts of Mahnomen and St. Louis Counties.
Tornadoes can be one mile wide and stay on the ground over 50 miles.
