Westrom gets a challenger
Bruce Campbell has been endorsed by the District 11 DFL to run against veteran Republican District 11A Rep. Torrey Westrom.
Campbell was endorsed at the recent DFL District 11 convention in Alexandria.
Campbell lives near Alexandria on Little Ida Lake. He is a bus driver for School District 206.
Campbell is a retired electrician who previously served as the Business Manager and Director of Apprentices, St. Paul Local 110 International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
As a retired, licensed electrician, he volunteers with Habitat for Humanity, WesMN, and the American Red Cross. He helped in the rebuilding efforts after Hurricane Katrina.
He is a long time activist in the Minnesota DFL party and for the past eight years has held the position of treasurer for the Douglas County Democrats.
Campbell is a member of the National Rifle Association, the Minnesota Deer Hunter's Association, and the Leaf Valley Sportsmen.
Westrom said he was familiar with Campbell's background but hasn't had dealings with him.
Westrom will be seeking his seventh term. His campaign efforts are beginning with the summer festival season.
"It's coming along fine," Westrom said. "Fortunately, we have a blueprint we've used before. We don't always stick to that but we work off it."
Voters typically start turning their attention to state races in the fall, but that might change this year, he said.
"Summers are always busy, but you do what you can," Westrom said. "Come September and October, people start paying attention. This year, I think there's going to be a lot of focus on the national race."
