Winkelman plays with Athletes in Action
North Dakota State men's basketball senior and Morris native Brett Winkelman is in Taiwan this week as part of the Athletes in Action team that will represent the United States in the 30th annual Jones Cup tournament.
Winkelman, a forward, and Bison teammate Ben Woodside, a guard from Albert Lea, are part of an 11-man roster of NCAA Division I players from Harvard, Michigan, UMKC, Tennessee-Chattanooga, Washington State, West Virginia, William & Mary and Xavier.
The team will play eight games in a span of nine days beginning Thursday, July 10, in Taipei and will perform outreach activities including basketball clinics and an orphanage visit.
The Jones Cup is Asia's premier international tournament. Other countries competing this year are Australia, Qatar, Jordan, Korea, Kazakhstan, Egypt and Taiwan. Jordan won last year's tournament.
United States teams have won 15 titles since the tournament's inception in 1977. AIA last won the Jones Cup in 2006.
The Bison duo heard of the Athletes in Action team through an acquaintance of Winkelman. The group is the sports division of Campus Crusade for Christ International.
