The small school setting in Hancock feels comfortable for the new K-12 school counselor. Karla Cronen grew up in Raymond and attended MACCRAY high school, both very familiar and similar in size to Hancock. Her last teaching position was also in a small school similar to Hancock.

After graduating from high school in 1998 Cronen attended Minnesota State College at Mankato where she received her bachelor’s degree. Her first job was as a social worker in Henning school. After two years of being a school social worker, a job opened up for a school counselor also in Henning. Cronen worked there for five years. Cronen received her master’s in school counseling from Minnesota State in Moorhead this past spring.

During these years, Cronen also got married and started a family. She met her husband, Justin, in Willmar and he later transferred to Minnesota State in Moorhead. They have been living in the Detroit Lakes area while Justin worked for Community Development Bank. This winter Justin was transferred to the Hancock branch bringing them both closer to family in the Raymond area. The couple, along with their two children, Brady 3 and Alyssa 2, are looking for a home in the Hancock area.

At Hancock school Cronen will be working four hours a day as the school counselor. Some of her duties are new and others were previously done by other instructors. Her hours will be filled with career counseling, including scholarship applications, career assessments and college searches. She will help prep students for ACT testing and assist with financial aid applications. Cronen will also arrange college visits at the school. She will be instrumental in hosting the career day.

Along with this, Cronen will also be teaching a study skills and social skills class to 7th and 8th graders. The main focus of this class is to help students adjust to high school and the study and social skills needed there. Examples of her duties will include, helping students learn how to study, take notes, and get organized.

Throughout the year Cronen will be working with the various testing requirements for all ages in the school.

Cronen will also be available for students to talk to her about any concerns and she invites parents to visit with her if they desire. She will encourage parent involvement in the college planning for seniors.

A new group Cronen hopes to organize will be called “new kids on the block”. This will be open for all new students at the school. The meetings for this group will focus on building friendships, adjusting to a new school and answer questions or address problems the new students may encounter.

Cronen not only feels very comfortable in the small school setting, but is also feeling very welcome in the community. She explained that people seem to be pleased that she has been hired and that the school will have a counselor again. Cronen is equally as pleased to be able to fill this position in Hancock.
