A stretch of nice weather last week made for an enjoyable Thanksgiving weekend for traveling, working outside, shopping, etc. Temperatures have not been so bad this week but some brisk winds made it feel a lot colder then it was. We also had a couple inches of snow on Wednesday evening. Some of our "snowbirds" already gone south for the winter.
In St. John's/Kongsvinger Parish news: the December newsletter is now out. Extra copies are available in the narthex of both churches.
Rev. Judy Gelinske will be installed as the interim pastor for the St. John's/Kongsvinger parish on Dec. 14 at both churches with a parish potluck dinner in her honor at noon at Kongsvinger. Sunday School will be held at St. John's that day from 9:45 a.m. until noon. Everyone is welcome to attend to help us welcome her to our parish and community. Several members of our parish traveled to Dubuque, Iowa on Nov. 25 to pick up her belongings, then helped moved her into the parsonage on Nov. 26.
Thank you to Minnette Johnson of Starbuck, Rev. Kristi Bratten-Lee of Morris, and Rev. Rochelle Anderson of Morris for being the guest pastors in our parish during November. Thanks also to Tom Horning of Chokio and Lola Smith of Donnelly for providing some of the music during the month.
The West Central Area WordAlone chapter will meet today (Saturday) at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cyrus with an advent program at 10 a.m. followed by a potluck dinner at 11 a.m.
The latest edition of the Meyer Mission News is now available. Copies are posted in the narthex of both churches. In it they have highlighted some of what has happened since their return to Africa earlier this year as well as some pictures of their mission work. If you would like to receive a copy of it via e-mail or regular mail let me know and I will forward your info to them.
Some events coming up in the parish this month are Christmas Caroling on Dec. 14; parish women's book club Dec. 17; Sunday School program Dec. 21; and Christmas services Dec. 24 and 25.
Four homes in the Donnelly area are included in this year's Morris Area Post Prom tour of homes, which will be held Sunday, Dec. 7. The annual craft sale at the Evelyn Kopel home in Donnelly continues today (Saturday). Posters with more details are up in Donnelly.
The annual Holiday service at the Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris will be held on Dec. 14 at 4 p.m.
There will be an open house at the SCMC Courage Cottage on Dec. 10 from 1 to 4 p.m.
Learning Unlimited will meet on Wednesday, Dec. 10 at 1 p.m. at the senior center in Morris. Laird Barber will present a program on Biblical Archeology.
Congratulations to Elysia Riedner and Derek Woodke on their engagement. His parents are Steve and Molly Woodke of Morris and his grandfather is Don Woodke of Morris. They will be married on Dec. 13 at Faith Lutheran Church in Morris.
Congratulations to the Wayzata football team for winning the Class 5A championship at the Metrodome on Nov. 28. Steve Gibbs is a member of that team. His parents are Bill and Jill of Wayzata, grandparents are Den and Jan Melchert of Alexandria and his great grandmother is Pearl (Albert) Anderson of Donnelly.
Congratulations to the following students of the quarter at MAHS: Bryce Jergenson, (Rob and Peggy) Sami Searle, (Brad and Amy) Jenna Moser, (Jon and Lori) Patrick Uphoff (Sue and the late Jon; grandparents are Gary and Karen; great grandparents are Bill and Evelyn Underwood) all of the Donnelly area.
On Nov. 28, several friends and family members from the area attended the funeral for Lois Schueller at the Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris.
Several members of the community attended the community Thanksgiving dinner at the Assumption Catholic Church on Nov. 27.
Jim and Lou Eystad called on Lou's aunt, Marlys Alm, at her apartment in Morris on Nov. 23.
On Nov. 29, Jim and Lou Eystad, Jerry, Joan, and Jon Kopacek and I were among those who helped with the advent decorating at St. John's.
On Nov. 30 several of us from the area attended the open house at Unger's Furniture in Morris. I also had the opportunity to visit my aunt Pearl (Albert) Anderson and my cousin Bev Hurlbut at their home in Donnelly that afternoon.
Dorothy Jordheim attended the WELCA Christmas party on Dec. 2 at St. John's.
Joyce Steuck and I attended the holiday open house at Coborn's in Morris on Dec. 3.
Russ and Winnie Johnson of Elk River were Friday visitors of the Kopacek family. Winnie is a granddaughter of Ole and Amalia (Kurd) Aanerud. Her parents were Karl and Ruth Aanerud. Ruth was a schoolteacher in district 36 north of Donnelly. She was rooming with Karl's sister and brother-in-la, when they met.
