Tigers pick up two victories at BOLD triangular
The Morris Area/Hancock/Chokio-Alberta wrestling team improved to 6-1 in dual action with a pair of victories at BOLD Tuesday. The Tigers defeated Tracy-Milroy-Balaton 42-31 and BOLD 44-23.
The Tigers' only dual loss this season was to state ranked Dawson-Boyd/Lac qui Parle Valley.
The Tigers again fielded a full team which made the difference in the match with T-M-B.
"In practice on Monday, coach Troy Ostby told his Tiger wrestlers that Tracy-Milroy-Balaton and BOLD are teams we can beat, so let's take it to them," said assistant coach Blaine Hill. "They listened."
Against T-M-B, the Tigers dropped the first three matches and had to fight back from a 16-0 deficit.
Mitchell Ascheman was pinned at 106 by Logan Axford in 1:47.
Then Travis Ostby lost to Caleb Christian 17-5 at 113.
Finally, Devin Robertson lost by pin to Brandon Schroeder in 1:37 at 120 pounds.
Then Evan Nelson scored a major decision 16-0 over Reed Salmon at 126 to get the Tigers on the scoreboard.
The teams then traded wins back and forth with Dillan Johnson losing a close match 4-3 to Joe Ruppert at 132 pounds.
This was followed by a major decision by Myles Smith over Marco Pecez at 138 and Seth Nelson losing by pin to Cody Christian with one second left on the clock at 145.
T-M-B held the lead 25-9 at this point, but that quickly changed with the Tigers picking up two more wins and two forfeits in the next four matches. Tracy won only one more match against the Tigers.
Jordan Thooft defeated Austin Peterson 13-3 at 152 and Tim Ostby won by forfeit at 160.
Connor Metzger defeated Tanner Michelson 18-0 at 170 and Wade Ehlers won by forfeit at 182.
Tyler Moser lost by pin to Brad Schmidt in 3:14 at 195 before Joel Harrison and Zach Gibson received forfeits to close out the scoring and the match.
The BOLD match was a see-saw battle that wasn't really decided until the last three matches.
Ascheman lost by major decision to Brady Zitzmann 14-4 at 106 pounds to put BOLD on the scoreboard first.
Then Travis Ostby put the Tigers in front with a pin over Lucas Melges in only 20 seconds at 113.
Robertson then lost to Benny Garcia 17-5 at 120 to put BOLD back on top, but Evan Nelson took that lead right back with a pin in 1:04 over Derek Lothert at 126.
Johnson lost his second close match of the night 6-5 against Brett Grund at 132, but the Tigers kept the lead 12-11.
Then Smith defeated Scott Rauenhorst 11-3 at 138 and Seth Nelson won by forfeit at 145. The Tigers led 22-11.
Alex Hatch defeated Thooft by tech fall 20-4 at 152.
Tim Ostby won by major decision 13-1 over Ben Steffel at 160.
Then BOLD picked up two straight wins with Metzger losing to Sean Wiebel 10-2 at 170 and Ehlers losing to Joel Erickson 14-9 at 182. This made the score 26-23 Tigers with three matches to go.
Moser recently made it down to 195 pounds and it was the momentum change the Tigers needed. He sealed the match with a pin in 4:59 over Trevor Nissen.
Harrison then received a forfeit at 220 and Zach Gibson finished the match with a pin in 49 seconds at 285 to cap off another total team effort.
The Tigers will travel to Paynesville on Friday for an Individual Tournament and then they will host Montevideo and Class A No. 2 ranked Wabasso/Red Rock Central next Thursday.
