Storm girls advance in Section 6A
The Morris Benson Area girls' hockey team advanced in the Section 6A quarterfinals Saturday with an 8-3 victory over Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Wadena-Deer Creek at the Lee Community Center.
The win was the 12th straight for the No. 3 seeded Storm against the No. 6 seeded Blue Devils.
Defending state champion Alexandria hosted the Storm Tuesday night in round two of the playoffs. The No. 2 seed Cardinals had a first-round bye.
Dani Schultz led the offense with a hat trick. Sara Rajewsky added two goals, while Sam Falk, Emily Rajewsky, and Brooke Anderson netted one puck apiece for the Storm Saturday.
Also playing offense were Kelly Mahoney, Abby Knutson, Sara Rajewsky and Katia Vantries.
Brooke Falk protected the net for the Storm, with help from a three-person defense of Dani Staples, Brooke Anderson and Monica Lindblad.
The Storm took a 3-0 lead after one period of play. MBA got on the scoreboard less than four minutes into the game when Schultz scored off a Dani Staples assist.
Schultz scored the second goal a little more than three minutes later with a pass from Sam Falk.
Falk netted the third goal on a power play with assists from Schultz and Kelly Mahoney.
The Storm was called for roughing and the Blue Devils were called for holding and tripping during the second period.
Brooke Falk had three saves for MBA and the Blue Devils' goalie stopped nine Storm shots.
Sara Rajewsky scored an unassisted goal short handed early in the second period. The Storm was called for checking but held off the power play. Then the Blue Devils were called for tripping and the Emily Rajewsky scored off a pass from sister Sara Rajewsky for a power-play goal. Coincidental minor penalties were called on both teams, high stick for MBA and slashing for the Blue Devils.
As those penalties expired, the Storm allowed a goal off the stick of Blue Devil Leah Dykhoff.
Falk had four saves for the Storm and the Blue Devil's Samantha Gorka stopped nine.
Less than a minute into the third period, Brooke Anderson caught a pass from Schultz for the Storm goal. The Blue Devils were called for hooking and MBA was called for tripping, when Sara Rajewsky scored on the pass from Schultz.
A trip in front of the net caused an MBA player to fall on the Blue Devil's goalie which delayed the game until another goalie could be padded. With the Storm in the box for tripping and the Blue Devil penalty expired, Schultz scored short handed to put the Storm up 8-1. The Blue Devils also had a tripping penalty and a hooking penalty. The Storm were called for a roughing penalty, but managed to hold off the power play. Dykhoff scored midway through the period and notched a hat trick for the final goal when the Storm was serving time for slashing.
Falk had two saves for the Storm in the third period and the Blue Devils stopped six.
