June 2, 1937-April 11, 2009 Lloyd V. Benson, 71, of Waubun, died Saturday, April 11, 2009, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Waubun. Lloyd Vernon Benson was born to Edna and Vernon Benson on June 2, 1937. He was raised east of Waubun, with his brother, Wayne Benson, and his sister, Beatrice (Benson) Purdy. In his early years, Lloyd worked as a logger and a construction worker. Later he worked at the Waubun Creamery, which was owned by the Kersting family, starting as a milk truck driver and later in the creamery.
May 20, 1958-April 15, 2009 John L "Squirrel" Critt, 50, of Frazee, died Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo. John Lee Critt was born to Beatrice Critt on May 20, 1958 in White Earth, where he attended school through the 10th grade, then moved to Frazee, where he graduated from Frazee High School in 1978. Following graduation he worked as a welder in a number of communities in the Western U.S. He returned to Frazee in the early 1980s. John enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family; especially his nieces and nephews.
March 29, 1919-April 19, 2009 Ernest A. Grani, 90, of Lake Park, died Sunday, April 19, 2009 in Viking Manor Nursing Home, Ulen. Ernest was born to Edwin and Annette (Quam) Grani, on March 29, 1919 in Eglon Township, Clay County. After his mother's death when he was three years old, he lived with his father on the farm and attended school in Eglon Township. Ernest was confirmed at Solem Lutheran Church. In February 1945, he entered the U.S. Army and was stationed in Italy. While in the Army, he was in the 88th Inventory Division.
May 15, 1959-April 11, 2009 John Fagre, 49, of Waubun, died Saturday, April 11, 2009 as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Waubun. John Stanley Fagre was born the son of Stanley and Darlene (Olson) Fagre on May 15, 1959 in Detroit Lakes. John attended and graduated from Waubun High School in 1978. After high school he, along with his brother Jeff and cousin, Doug Nelson, joined the United States Navy. He spent part of his tour of duty in Scotland and Florida, while working in the Navy shipyards. John married Brenda Little on Dec. 18, 1982 in Macon, Ga.
A.H. "Whitey" Oberg, 87, of Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Calif., passed away on Friday, April 10, 2009, at his home, with his wife Luella and oldest daughter Susan by his side. Whitey met Luella Henderson at White Earth Lake, and they were married on Sept. 22, 1949; they remained married for 60 years.
Nov. 26, 1928-April 14, 2009 Barbara M. Standal, 80, of Detroit Lakes, died Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at her residence. Barbara M. Schneider was born to John and Mary (McGreevy) Schneider on Nov. 26, 1928 in Elkton, Minn. She grew up and attended school in Adams, Minn., graduating from Adams High School. She then attended the Kahler School of Nursing in Rochester, Minn., where she graduated as a registered nurse (RN). While working in the hospital in Austin, Minn., she met a young funeral director, who would become her husband. On July 6, 1953 she married Wayne Standal in Austin.
Sept. 26, 1972-April 13, 2009 Jason D. MacPherson, 36, of Detroit Lakes, died Monday, April 13, 2009 at St. Mary's Innovis Health, Detroit Lakes, as the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Jason Douglas MacPherson was born the son of Phillip and Ilene (Reller) MacPherson on Sept. 26, 1972, in Minneapolis. He attended grade school at Holy Rosary and graduated from Detroit Lakes High School in 1991. It was shortly after Jason' s high school years that he became co-founder of J & K Shoreline Service.
March 3, 1914-March 30, 2009 Mildred H. "Millie" Berg, 95, of Ellsworth, Wis., died peacefully Monday, March 30, 2009 in the town of El Paso, at the home of her son Norris and his family. Millie was born the daughter of Arthur and Aurora (Lundquist) Kuhn, Sr., on March 3, 1914 in Red Wing, Minn. Her family owned Kuhn Drug in Red Wing for 55 years. Millie attended schools in Red Wing and married Cecil Berg on Jan. 6, 1942 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Red Wing. Cecil managed several creameries in Minnesota, North Dakota and Wyoming.
Dec. 14, 1924-April 13, 2009 Alene M. Clementson, 84, of Fosston, Minn., passed away on Monday, April 13, 2009 at First Care Nursing Home in Fosston. Alene Margaret Naastad was born to Lorentz and Louise (Berglund) Naastad on Dec. 14, 1924 in Aiktow, Saskatchewan, Canada. She was baptized in Canada. At the age of one year, she moved with her parents and brothers to Queen Township in Polk County, Minn. She was confirmed on April 22, 1939 by Rev. G. Gulberg at Cross Lake Lutheran Church, Queen Township, rural Fosston.
Dec. 21, 1914-April 14, 2009 Former Frazee resident Grace F. Collins, 94, of Detroit Lakes, died Tuesday, April 14, 2009 in the Frazee Care Center. Grace F. Brugman was born to John and Jean (Tate) Brugman on Dec. 21, 1914 in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan, Canada. She moved with her family to Alberta, Minn., and later to Morris, Minn., where she graduated from Morris High School in 1935. In 1940, Grace married William Collins, Sr., in Menahga. They lived in several communities in Minnesota prior to moving to Frazee in 1950.
