Sept. 1, 1918-Jan. 18, 2008 Former Waubun resident Sheldon Edward Nygaard, 89, of Detroit Lakes, died Friday, January 18, 2008, at Innovis Heath Systems in Fargo. Sheldon Edward Nygaard was born to Ole and Louise (Hanson) Nygaard on Sept. 1, 1918, in Ryder, N.D., where he grew up and began his schooling. At the age of 11, he moved with his family to the Waubun area, where he continued his education. On May 2, 1957, Sheldon married Darlene Shiek in Moorhead. The couple made their home in Moorhead for a short time before moving to the farm east of Waubun.
Oct. 6, 1931-Jan. 21, 2008 Clarence N. Impola, 76, of Lake Park, died January 21, 2008 at his home. Clarence was born to Laurie and Helvi (Korkkeamaki) Impola on Oct. 6, 1931 in Wawina, Minn. He was raised and educated in Duluth, Minn., graduating from Duluth Central High School in 1949. He then enlisted in the United States Air Force in September 1949, and received an honorable discharge as a staff sergeant in the control tower in December 1952. Clarence returned to Duluth and attended the University of Minnesota-Duluth, receiving a bachelor's degree in chemistry.
Trevor Lloyd Rust, 4 months old, died Friday, January 4, 2008. Surviving are his parents, Milton and Jessica Rust; brothers, Hunter Douglas Rust and Jonathan Lee Bahlman; grandparents, Warren and Linda Rust and Richard and Jennifer Johnson; and great grandparents, Karen and Larry Hinton. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Charles Hinton, and great grandmother, Barb Kramer. Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 12 at Phoenix Memorial Mortuary Chapel, Phoenix, Ariz. The family has set up a memorial fund in Trevor's name. Contributions may be made to any Wells Fargo Bank.
May 25, 1954-Jan. 21, 2008 Larry J. "LJ" Arnold, 53, of Detroit Lakes died at home on Monday, Jan. 21, 2008 of cancer. Larry Joe Arnold was born to Viola and Bill Arnold on May 25, 1954 in Dayton, Ohio. After graduating from high school, LJ continued his education in an auto body program. He had the opportunity to play semi-pro baseball, which included a game against Pete Rose. As baseball was not to be his future, he worked the rodeo circuit in Arizona, riding bulls and busting broncos. LJ's love of the cowboy life led him to Colorado to work as a ranch hand.
Aug. 4, 1937-Jan. 19, 2008 Harry Ailport, 70, of Mahnomen, died Saturday, January 19, 2008 in his home. Harry Arbert Ailport was born the son of Hazel and Jim Ailport on Aug. 4, 1937 in Footville, Wis. He grew up in Dansbury, Wis., and attended school there. Furthering his education, Harry obtained training as a machinist at a vocational school. In 1955, he entered the United States Army, where he served his country for two years. Upon an honorable discharge, Harry moved to Chicago, Ill., to begin his career as a machinist.
June 6, 1946-Jan. 19, 2008 Paul B. Sukke, 61, of Detroit Lakes, died Saturday, January 19, 2008 at Innovis Hospital in Fargo. Paul Bernard Sukke was born to Wayne and Angeline (Sulier) Sukke on June 6, 1946 in Benson, Minn. He was a 1964 graduate of Benson High School, where he was active in music and sports. In 1968, Paul graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead with a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics. He married Madalyn Conger in 1967 in Moorhead. He joined the U.S.
March 1, 1935-Jan. 17, 2008 Former area resident Patricia J. Duffney, 72, of Spencer, Iowa, died Thursday, January 17, 2008, at the Longhouse Residence in Spencer. Patricia Josephine Peters, the daughter of Lloyd and Winifred (Sain) Peters, was born March 1, 1935, in Lincoln, Neb. In September 1938, her family moved to Mason City, Iowa, where Patricia received her education, graduating in 1953. She attended a girl's school in Alton, Ill., on an art scholarship. During the following summer, she attended Mason City Junior College, and received a teacher's certificate in August 1955.
Feb. 21, 1939-Dec. 20, 2007 Detroit Lakes native Russell Willard Landt, 68, of Coram, Mont., passed away Thursday, December 20, 2007, at Immanuel Lutheran Home in Kalispell, Mont. Russell was born to Willard and Bonita (Johnston) Landt on Feb. 21, 1939, in Detroit Lakes, where he attended school and graduated from Detroit Lakes High School in 1957. He attended North Dakota State University for a short time, then transferred to Moorhead State University in Minnesota, where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in history and biology. Russell married Beatrice LaChance on Sept.
Clarence N. Impola, 76, of Lake Park, died Monday, January 21, 2008 at his residence. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25 at the West-Kjos Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes. Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, at First Lutheran Church in Audubon. Arrangements have been entrusted to West-Kjos Funeral Home, Detroit Lakes. May 12, 1914-Jan. 16, 2008 Former Detroit Lakes resident Mary E. Voracek, 93, of Moline, Ill., died Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at the Frazee Care Center, Frazee. Mary Elsie Hustak was born May 12, 1914 in Onamia, Minn. She attended and graduated from the Onamia schools. Mary moved to Fargo and married Frank Voracek in 1934. She worked at Herbst Department Store and Royal Jewelers in Fargo. She retired to Detroit Lakes in 1973. Frank died in 1979, and Mary moved to Moline in 2003. Mary spent the winters in Arizona and Hawaii, summering in Detroit Lakes.
