A tractor discs a field on Monday afternoon in a field between Morris and Hancock. Field work started in earnest in some area fields late last week and over the weekend with mild temperatures. But, rain and even a chance of snow, along with cooler temperatures are predicted for much of this week.
Associate Professor of English and American Indian Studies Becca Gercken is a recipient of the Horace T. Morse - University of Minnesota Alumni Association Award for Outstanding Contributions to Undergraduate Education (Horace T. Morse Award). The award honors faculty who excel in teaching, research, creative activities, advising, academic program development, and educational leadership.
There is no need anymore for Crystal Lanes Bowling Center owner David Ziegelmann to stop by the Stevens County Economic Improvement Commission office. Ziegelmann has made his final payment on loan from the SCEIC. Cheryl Kuhn has been the SCEIC's executive director for about six months. "Working with David just this short time...I can see the passion he has," Kuhn said. Ziegelmann stops each month to make his loan payment on time.
A sixth-grade classroom was cut for the 2017-2018 school year at Morris Area Elementary School.
If a portion of the sanitary sewer pipes are replaced in areas of Morris Area High School school board members want to make sure they don't waste any money. More than just the pipes to the girls locker room and science lab may need to be replaced, school officials said at a facilities review meeting April 17. "We know we have issues in the main (line)," custodial director Scott Rollag said.
A facilities study completed by the Winkelman Building Corp. and its associates confirms the Morris Area High School needs work and now, the school board will start to determine just how much of that work it wants done.
Morris Area Elementary School second-graders sang songs about trains, the range and other topics from the old days in the American west during a recent concert at the school. For video from this concert, see the Sun Tribune's website.
The Morris Area High School Prom is Saturday, April 20. The title is "This is the Moment" and the theme is vintage hollywood. The grand march starts at 5:30 p.m. and doors open at 4:30 p.m.. Cost is $3 for adults, $2 for students in K-12 and senior citizens and kids 4 and under are free. Yearbook pictures for the grand march couples are from 2 to 4:30 p.m. The prom banquet is at 7 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church.
A nice weekend has given way to a cold and rainy week; so far I have not seen any evidence of widespread field work, although I have heard of a few farmers planting wheat. On Saturday, April 15, the Indivisible West Central MN group gathered in Glenwood for the Tax March, a nation-wide movement asking President Donald Trump to reveal his taxes. Joined by others from the community and the Indivisible Morris group, the protesters marched from the Glenwood Post Office to the Pope County Courthouse.
