To the editor, Thank you, Rep. Jeff Backer, for your courageous votes in favor of the "buffer bill" in 2015 and 2016, and for your work on the conference committee that worked out the final details of the bill that ultimately became law. While buffer rules have been in place for decades in Minnesota, I'm glad Rep. Backer supported efforts to give these rules some much needed updates and teeth in order to start cleaning up some of the 40 percent of Minnesota waters that are impaired for conventional pollutants.
Asking the Big Questions The next Asking the Big Questions discussion will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21, in the Briggs Library McGinnis Room. Come explore what the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) symbolizes as a Native American issue and also in the context of water rights and energy production. Guest speakers include NASNTI Postdoctoral Fellow Brian Twenter, Sustainability Coordinator Troy Goodnough, and a UMM student who has experience at the activist camp. This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
When something bad happens, Dona Greiner wants Stevens County to be ready to safely respond. Greiner is the emergency management director for Stevens County. "I sleep, eat and dream emergency management planning," Greiner said. She recently received the "Outstanding Commitment to Emergency Management" award from the state of Minnesota and its Department of Public Safety and Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.
These kids were ready for an interview, even if it didn't mean taking a break from a play period. I was in the pre-kindergarten classroom this week at St. Mary's Catholic School in Morris. The kids in this class along with the other classes at St. Mary's participated in a cool way to say thank you. The students brought Valentines to various members of the community. The pre-kindergarten students in Michelle Nonnemacher's class brought Valentines to the Morris Police Department. "We went to the police station in the morning," Gabriella Jost said.
St. John's and Kongsvinger news: The Kongsvinger service will be broadcast at 11 a.m. KMRS on Feb. 19. It will also be adopted grandparent Sunday during Sunday School. Lenten services start March 1 at Kongsvinger. Services are at 7 p.m. The annual auction and dinner for St. Mary's School is Feb. 25 starting at 4 p.m. at the National Guard Armory in Morris. The West Central Homes annual meeting is 1 p.m Feb. 26t at the Federated Church in Morris.
Saturday, February 18 SPECIAL OLYMPICS NIGHT will be held in the Morris Elementary gym and is sponsored by the Morris Area Business Professionals of America. The Special Olympics chapter athletes will be invited onto the court during halftime. The basketball game will start at 4 p.m. There will be a silent auction starting at 1 p.m. Monday, February 20

There will be an open house baby shower for Zoey Margaret Schmidgall, from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cyrus. Zoey is the daughter of Kayla and Adam Schmidgall. There will be an open pouse bridal shower in honor of Megan Mecklenburg, bride to be of Patrick Uphoff, from 2 to 4 p.m., Saturday, March 4, at Faith Lutheran Church in Morris. The couple is registered at Menards, Target and B Inspired.
