Theft takes fair fun away I am writing this letter with a knot in my stomach. I had taken some exhibits to the Stevens county fair for my dad this past week. He does some painting on saw blades and other items which I really enjoy looking at as having someone who can do things like this in my family is a blessing. We thought it would be a good idea to bring them to the fair for others to enjoy, but to our dismay when we got to the fair on Sunday to pick them up we had found that someone had stolen one.
Living in Bill's Minnesota You know, I wish I lived in the same Minnesota that District 11 Sen. Bill Ingebrigtsen apparently lives in. The Minnesota that's not facing a substantial budget deficit. The Minnesota where everyone who wants to work has a job that supports them and their family. The Minnesota where we have the ability to fully fund our schools, cities and counties, as they provide the services we need them to provide. Unfortunately, I live in the real Minnesota, a state that is going to have to face some tough times and make some difficult decisions.
Morris Home Care eliminated I am writing to thank the community of Morris and the surrounding areas for supporting our efforts at Lakeland Hospice & Home Care. We are an organization with two separate agencies to serve people with loving, compassionate care. We provide in-home health care for patients who are in need of services following an injury, hospitalization, surgery or other illness. Our second agency, Lakeland Hospice, provides hospice care, which serves patients who have been diagnosed with a life-limiting illness. As of Aug.
McCannon best county candidate I would like to remind everyone that Tuesday, August 10 is the primary election for Stevens County District 5 Commissioner. (District 5 is the northwest part of Morris and the northwest part of Stevens County.) I believe Roger McCannon is the best candidate for county commissioner. Over the past 30 years Roger has grappled with the critical challenges facing our county. He has served our county and city on numerous boards and committees -- from the Morris School Board to Ag Extension to the Rural Development Council to the Association of Minnesota Counties.
Support LTD any way you can We are writing to remind you that on July 24 the Annual LTD Memorial Tour will be taking place in West Central Minnesota. We encourage you to be a part of the event even if you are not a biker. Citizens standing along the curbs or waiting at the end of their driveway, perhaps waving a flag or holding a sign, add so much to the event.
Who's to blame for break-ins? What has happened to our town? Why are there so many thefts and car break-ins in our town the last few weeks? Who are these people and what are we going to do about it? I had only heard about the thefts second-hand until June 23, when a friend had his pickup broken into in broad daylight. The police were called and they are investigating. We have to start to watch out for each other and put an end to this. Who is doing this? Kids? Gangs? Outsiders? Who?
Poem for Flag Day This poem was submitted in honor of Flag Day on June 14: The Flag Here comes the Flag! Hail it! Who dares to drag Or trail it? Give it hurrahs -- Three for the stars. Three for the bars. Uncover your head to it! The soldiers who tread to it Shout at the sight of it, The justice and right of it, The unsullied white of it, The blue and red of it, And tyranny's dread of it! Here comes the Flag! Cheer it! Valley and crag Shall hear it. Fathers shall bless it, Children caress it, All shall maintain it, No one shall stain it, Cheers for the sailors that f
Texting while biking While driving in Morris recently, I met a person riding a bicycle with no hands and texting on his cell phone. I was apprehensive to even pass the bicyclist in the other lane. What would happen if the bicyclist suddenly hit a rock or other obstacle and lost control of the bike? Please be courteous to those who are in vehicles and wait to do your texting until you reach your destination. It could be your life that is saved. Thank you! Sandy Groneberg Hoffman
Memorial Day reflections The following poem was inspired by seeing my 76-year-old dad, J.G. Maughan, carrying the American flag at the head of the Memorial Day parade in Morris. He always hung the flag on holidays and included all of us kids in that activity. He loved his country and taught his children love and respect for the American flag and the sacrifices made for our freedome. When our oldest daughter, Bonnie, was three years old, she memorized this poem and recited it on junior Sunday school at our church.
Food Shelf has great support The Stevens County Food Shelf would like to thank all those who contributed food and dollars to our March campaign and to those who have contributed through out the year. Special thanks to the chuches, schools, clubs, businesses, and the University of Minnesota, Morris for all their help. The postal workers did a wonderful job of collecting food this year, too.
