In the last several weeks the topic of a so-called "assault weapons" ban has been discussed at every kitchen table, as well as in every office of every elected official...
Our hats off to the person from Chokio who wrote the article about shopping in Morris. We agree with him one hundred percent. We came to the area from a big city and were surprised that a city the size of Morris had such little choices to shop at. We now drive to Alexandria and do most of our shopping. Think of the jobs Morris could offer people. It's Morris's loss. Marie and Arnold Schultz Starbuck, Minn.
Since the Courage Cottage is owned and operated by Stevens Community Medical Center, we share the same mission statement: "Caring is our reason for being." I am writing to tell everyone that this mission statement has rubbed off on the members of our community and those in the surrounding area. Our residents come to the Courage Cottage with many different diagnoses requiring diverse care. The one similarity between all our residents and their families is the tender loving care received by the entire staff.
On behalf of the clients the Salvation Army will be able to serve, I would like to thank the community for their support. We raised $13,855.55 during our Christmas Kettle Campaign. More than 30 individuals and 20 different groups rang bells to make this possible. Their contributions are a shining example of the true spirit of Christmas. To everyone who supported our Christmas Kettle effort, please know how valuable your contributions are.
I'm not sure if everything Douglas Harvey Peterson said in his letter is factual (Sun Tribune Jan. 5, 2013) but I do know the story was out that about 50 years ago when 3M was looking for a place to build, Morris was a likely spot, but the rumor goes that a greedy landowner wanted too much money for the land, and 3M built in Alexandria.
It is hard to fight ignorance, I know that is a harsh word but that is what this gun ban stuff seems to be. First what is an "assault rifle"? The word comes from WWII when the first of the smaller automatic rifles came into being and were dubbed "assault rifles" to differentiate it from the standard military rifles and machine guns. It seems the media loved the terrible connotation so in their chance to stir-up their anti-gun hysteria what could be better?
If everyone from Morris or the Morris area shopped 10 percent more in Morris how would that increase the selection in Morris when most of the things we shop for are not available in Morris to begin with? We would not need to make a resolution to do at least 10 percent less shopping in Alexandria if the leaders of Morris and Stevens County had done their job more efficiently. If the leaders of Morris and Stevens County would have let businesses like Walmart, Fleet Farm, Menards, etc.
Do 10 percent more in Morris If Morris is "your" town, why don't you make a New Year's resolution to do at least 10 percent more of your shopping in Morris than you did in other years? If all of us who journey to Alexandria to shop at Wal Mart, Fleet Farm, Menards, etc.
Proposals could threaten child care in area Thank you to the people that attended the Nov. 19 Informational meeting regarding the Infant Mortality Report and Proposed Recommendations. Also thank you to the County Commissioners for your attendance. If the proposed recommendations pass as written, there will be devastating results. Providers will not be able to provide care for infants and toddlers as we currently do. If these proposed recommendations pass, there will be fewer providers and child care for infants and toddlers will be very difficult for parents to access.
The Taxpayers Protection Alliance fails on every level Drew Johnson's opinion piece on behalf of the "Taxpayers Protection Alliance" (TPA) in last week's paper ("'All of the Above' Fails on Every Level," Morris Sun Tribune, Dec. 1, 2012) was equal parts misinformation and dishonest cost accounting. Among the more bogus claims, the suggestion that renewable energy technologies are disproportionately favored by federal policy really stands out. This assertion is not even in the neighborhood of being true.
