Harriet Schwartz, 88, died at Bethany Community in Alexandria, on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011. Harriet Maxine Heuer was born Oct. 3, 1923 at home near Donnelly, to Roy and Verna (Sutton) Heuer. She married Ralph Fynboh in January 1941. They farmed and raised three sons in Stevens County until Ralph's death in 1958. In 1965 she married Frank Schwartz of Canby, where they farmed and raised his twin daughters. Frank died in March 2002 and Harriet moved to Brandon, in 2004. Harriet's greatest loves were her God and her family.
Richard Alan Grant, professor emeritus of English at the University of Minnesota, Morris, died Aug. 8. 2011, eight days after his 84th birthday. He was born in Springfield, Mass., the son of Clifford and Beatrice Rollins Grant. He spent his summers as a youth at Ocean Park, Maine, where his great-great-great-grandfather built the first cottage. He joined the Navy at age 17, serving on a minesweeper in Tokyo Harbor. He graduated from Colby College in Maine and received his master's at Cornell University.
Funeral services for Beverly Hoffman were held on Monday, Sept. 19, 2011, at 2 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Appleton with Pastor Michelle Rowell officiating. Pati Arnold was the organist and accompanied the congregation in the singing of the hymns. Honorary Bearers were all of the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Casketbearers were Cory Hoffman, Matthew Karty, Scott Miller, Benedict Burns, B J Opoien, and Brian Bennett.
Funeral services for Donald Heikkinen of Hancock, will be held Friday, Sept. 9, 2011 at 4:30 p.m. at the Morris Area Elementary Concert Hall in Morris. Reverend Dell Sanderson and Reverend Dan Carlson will be officiating. Visitation will be held Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris and for one hour prior to services at the school on Friday. Military rites will be provided by the Minnesota Army National Guard Honor Guard and the Minnesota Law Enforcement Memorial Association. John "Jack" Edward Ault, 77 of Detroit Lakes, formally of Morris, died on Friday, Sept. 2, 2011. Funeral services were held at the Congretational United Church of Christ in Detrpit Lakes, on Sept. 6. Rev. Mark Kuether officiated.
David Lee Tolifson son of Leslie and Deloris (Polzin) Tolifson was born on Nov. 14, 1940 at home in Holloway during the Armistice Day blizzard. In his younger years he loved riding his horse "Silver" at the farm in Appleton, which his mother even made him leather saddle bags. David attended school in Morris. The family moved to a farm near Norcross where he helped farm. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served during the Cold War in Germany. On May 28, 1966 David was united in marriage to Janice Lesmeister at the St. Charles Catholic Church in Herman.
Glendiva Backman was born during a terrible blizzard in the early morning of Jan. 19, 1923 on her parents' farm in Stony Brook Township in Grant County. Her parents were Iver Melaas and Tilla (Olsen Haugsrud) Melaas. She was baptized and confirmed at Rock Prairie Lutheran Church, Grant County. She received her education in country school District #70 ending in eighth grade, as was the custom for many farm kids. Her dream to become a grade school teacher was never realized, but she continued her education by reading newspapers and helping her children with their homework.
Funeral services for Norma Madsen, age 93, of Wilmot will be Wednesday, Sept. 7 at 10:30 a.m. at Wilmot Lutheran Church. Rev. Justin Neugebauer will officiate and burial will be in the Wilmot Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church on Tuesday, beginning at 4 p.m. followed by a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue Wednesday morning, one hour prior to the service.
Bernice Luthi passed away Sept. 1, 2011. Services will be Tuesday, Sept. 6 at Apostolic Christian Church in Morris at 10 a.m. Visitation will be Monday, Sept. 5 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris and one hour prior to the service at the church
A memoroial service will be held for James M. Lemen, formally of Morris, at the Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris on Sept. 12, 2011 at 11 a.m.
